Banking in Sri Lanka

Recommended banks, payment culture and credit score basics.

Sri Lanka's banking sector is regulated by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL). The top banks for expats are Commercial Bank of Ceylon and Sampath Bank — both offer English-language service, efficient processes, and good international transfer facilities. Foreign nationals with a valid visa can open bank accounts. Multi-currency accounts are available at most banks. Post-2022 economic crisis stabilisation: the LKR is now more stable and the banking system has recovered, though interest rates remain elevated.

Recommended banks

Commercial Bank of Ceylon

English
traditional

Monthly fee: LKR 0–500/month depending on account type

Requirements: Passport, valid visa, proof of address in Sri Lanka (utility bill or landlord letter), TIN (Taxpayer ID), and initial deposit (LKR 5,000–25,000).

  • + Most widely used bank by expats and foreign companies
  • + Excellent online banking (ComBank Digital) and mobile app
  • + Multi-currency accounts (USD, EUR, GBP, AUD) available — essential for salary or foreign income
  • + Good international SWIFT transfer capabilities
  • + Extensive ATM network (800+ ATMs nationwide)
  • + Visa and Mastercard debit/credit cards issued to foreign nationals
  • - Some branches slow with paperwork — choose Colombo 3 (Union Place) or WorldLine branches for expat-friendly service; branch quality varies significantly
  • - Bureaucratic documentation requirements can feel excessive initially — TIN, landlord letter, and visa documentation all required; allow 1–2 weeks for full account activation
  • - International SWIFT fees: LKR 1,500–4,000 per outbound transfer — Wise is significantly cheaper for regular overseas remittances
  • - Currency conversion restrictions may apply — CBSL regulations govern foreign currency account usage; consult bank for current rules on inbound and outbound transfers

Sampath Bank

English
traditional

Monthly fee: LKR 0–300/month

Requirements: Passport, valid visa, proof of address, TIN, initial deposit LKR 2,500+.

  • + Strong mobile banking app (Sampath Vishwa) — highly rated among Sri Lankan banking apps
  • + Good online banking platform
  • + Competitive exchange rates for foreign remittances
  • + Efficient account opening process
  • + International debit/credit cards available
  • + Good corporate banking for BOI (Board of Investment) companies

  • - International SWIFT fees: LKR 1,500–4,000 per outbound transfer — Wise is significantly cheaper for regular overseas remittances
  • - Smaller ATM network than Commercial Bank — fewer ATM locations nationwide; less reliable cash access outside major urban centres

  • + Largest branch network in Sri Lanka after Bank of Ceylon — essential for expats based outside Colombo in provincial cities, towns, or rural areas
  • + Government-guaranteed bank — high stability for deposit holders; state ownership provides implicit deposit security
  • + Widely used by NGOs, UN agencies, and government-sector employers for staff payroll in provincial areas
  • + USD and other foreign currency savings accounts available alongside LKR

  • - International SWIFT fees: LKR 1,500–4,000 per outbound transfer — Wise is significantly cheaper for regular overseas remittances

Payment culture

Cash (LKR) remains dominant in Sri Lanka, particularly outside Colombo. Always carry LKR cash for local eateries, markets, tuk-tuks, and rural areas. Credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard) accepted at hotels, supermarkets, petrol stations, and most restaurants in Colombo. LankaQR (national QR payment standard) is growing — accepted at Keells Super, SPAR, and many small businesses. Mobile banking apps widely used for bill payments (electricity, water, phone) and bank transfers. American Express cards have limited acceptance. International cards at ATMs: most Commercial Bank, Sampath, and HNB ATMs accept Visa/Mastercard — withdrawal fee applies.

Cash access

ATMs widely available in Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Negombo, and all major tourist areas. Commercial Bank, HNB, Sampath, and People's Bank ATMs reliably accept Visa/Mastercard foreign cards. Rural areas and smaller towns: carry cash. Withdrawal limit: typically LKR 50,000–100,000 per transaction. Foreign card fee: LKR 300–500 per transaction plus your home bank's foreign transaction fee.

CRIB (Credit Information Bureau of Sri Lanka)

Request your credit report at crib.lk or in person at CRIB offices, 475/7 T.B. Jayah Mawatha, Colombo 10. Free annual report available.

Free annual check: One free credit report per year from CRIB.

Foreign nationals have no CRIB credit history on arrival. Banks typically require 6–12 months of Sri Lankan banking history and proof of income before approving credit cards or loans. Starting with a secured card (fixed deposit-backed) is the fastest way to build credit history in Sri Lanka.

International transfers

Wire transfers (SWIFT) available at all major banks. Fees: LKR 1,500–4,000 per international transfer. For regular personal transfers, Wise offers competitive rates with no hidden fees — works well for LKR from/to most major currencies. Western Union and MoneyGram have widespread agent locations. Remittances from abroad: all major banks accept inward SWIFT transfers. Sri Lankan banks must comply with CBSL reporting requirements for large transfers (above USD 10,000).
