The O/L (Ordinary Level, Grade 11) and A/L (Advanced Level, Grade 13) examinations are the national standards. International schools follow IGCSE/A-Level, IB, or American curricula — essential for expat families seeking internationally recognised qualifications.

Secondary School (Grade 6–13)

Ages: 10–19 years · Language: Sinhala or Tamil (government schools). English at international schools.

Government: placement based on Grade 5 Scholarship Exam results. International schools: direct application with transcripts, assessment, and interview.

O/L (Grade 11) and A/L (Grade 13) are the critical academic milestones. International school A-Level and IB results are recognised globally. Most expat families choose international schools for English-medium education with globally transferable qualifications.

International Schools

Colombo has a strong cluster of international schools catering to the expat community. Semester fee
