Top schools (2025/26 fees in LKR): Colombo International School (CIS, British curriculum, IGCSE/A-Level) — LKR 1,200,000–2,200,000+/year (approx. USD 4,000–7,300 at current LKR/USD ~300; confirm current rates with school); British School in Colombo (BSC, IGCSE/A-Level) — LKR 1,000,000–1,800,000/year; American International School of Colombo (AISC, American IB curriculum, PK–Grade 12) — fees generally set in USD; Overseas School of Colombo (OSC, IB World School) — USD 8,000–22,000/year; Gateway College International (British curriculum, IGCSE) — LKR 800,000–2,000,000/year. Kandy has Hillwood College and Trinity College (prestigious national schools with English sections). Application 12 months in advance strongly recommended for top schools. Most international employer packages include school fees as part of the expat package.
🎓 University
State universities: Sri Lankan nationals via University Grants Commission (UGC) based on A/L Z-Score. International students: apply directly to university international admissions office. Private universities: direct application with academic transcripts, English proficiency test (IELTS/TOEFL), and interview.
🗣️ Language Courses
Sinhala is phonetically regular and learning the script is helpful but not essential for daily life as an expat in Colombo. Most Colombo residents and all formal sector workers speak English. Sinhala skills are appreciated in rural areas and cultural settings.
Tamil is essential for working in the Northern Province (Jaffna), Eastern Province (Trincomalee, Batticaloa), and Tamil estate communities. Standard Sri Lankan Tamil is mutually intelligible with Indian Tamil speakers.
English proficiency among Sri Lankan professionals is generally high — the British Council and American Center primarily serve those seeking international qualifications (IELTS 6.0+ for UK/Australia immigration).
