Department of Labour Sri Lanka

ශ්‍රම දෙපාර්තමේන්තුව

Register at any Divisional Employment Service Centre (DESCO) or at the Department of Labour, 40 Ananda Rajakaruna Mawatha, Colombo 10. Bring NIC/passport and educational certificates. Registration is free for Sri Lankan job seekers.

Expat eligibility: The Department of Labour primarily serves Sri Lankan job seekers. Foreign nationals seeking employment in Sri Lanka must secure a position independently and obtain a work visa through their employer. 💼 Work Permits

EU Citizens

EU citizens have no special preference in Sri Lanka — the same work visa process applies to all foreign nationals regardless of origin. There is no EU-Sri Lanka free movement agreement.

Non-EU Citizens

All foreign nationals require a work visa to be employed in Sri Lanka. Process: employer obtains approval from Dept of Immigration → work visa issued → employee can start work. BOI-registered companies benefit from a faster, centralised process. Work visa is tied to the sponsoring employer.

EU Blue Card

Sri Lanka does not have an EU Blue Card equivalent. High-skilled workers use the standard employment/business visa.

Freelancer Visa

No formal digital nomad or freelancer visa as of 2026. Remote workers and freelancers serving foreign clients typically operate on an ETA (short stays) or Resident Guest Visa. A digital nomad visa has been discussed but not yet gazetted. BOI is developing new visa categories to attract tech talent and digital workers.

⏱️ Work Culture

Typical hours 8am–5pm Monday–Friday is standard for formal sector. Private sector often 8:30am–5:30pm. Saturday working is common in some sectors (half-day or full day). Garment and manufacturing: shift work. NGO/UN: standard international patterns with flexitime common.

Annual leave Statutory minimum: 14 days annual leave after 1 year of service (Shops and Office Employees Act). Most professional employers offer 14–21 days. Senior executives: 21–30 days. Plus 25 public holidays (including all Poya days) — one of the highest public holiday counts globally.

Sick leave 7 days casual leave per year (can be used as sick leave). 14 days sick leave per year for employees earning below LKR 50,000/month; 7 days for others. Certification from registered medical practitioner required for sick leave claims.

Trial period Probationary period typically 3–6 months as stated in the employment contract. During probation, employer can terminate with shorter notice. After confirmation, full Labour Act protections apply.

Notice period Minimum 1 month written notice for resignation or termination (Shops and Office Employees Act). Most professional contracts specify 1–3 months. Executives and managers may have 3–6 months notice. Payment in lieu of notice is common.

Salary range Senior management (MNC/UN): LKR 300,000–1,000,000+/month. Mid-level professional: LKR 100,000–300,000/month. Entry professional: LKR 50,000–100,000/month. National minimum wage 2026: LKR 30,000/month (effective January 1, 2026 — increased from LKR 27,000; LKR 1,200/hour). Expats typically earn USD or have USD salary component. UN/NGO professionals often on USD packages.

Pay frequency Monthly, typically paid at the end of the calendar month.
