Visa-Free Access

Sri Lanka offers free Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to nationals of 40 countries as of 25 May 2026 (including EU states, UK, USA, Australia, Canada, Japan, South Korea, India, China, and Gulf states), plus Maldives, Seychelles and Singapore under separate reciprocal arrangements. Other nationalities can obtain an ETA online for USD 50. Citizens of a small number of countries require a visa on arrival or embassy visa — check the official ETA portal at eta.gov.lk for the current country list. ETA allows up to 30 days stay, extendable to 90 days at the Department of Immigration in Colombo.

Sri Lanka's visa system is managed by the Department of Immigration and Emigration (immigration.gov.lk). ETA applications are at eta.gov.lk. All long-term visas (business, resident guest, student) are applied for in person at the Department of Immigration, 41 Ananda Rajakaruna Mawatha, Colombo 10. Overstaying a visa carries fines of USD 10–40/day and potential deportation. Always maintain valid immigration status — check your ETA/visa expiry dates carefully. From 25 May 2026, nationals of 40 countries receive the tourist ETA free of charge — verify the current list at eta.gov.lk.

Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) — Tourist/Short Stay

ETA

Free for nationals of 40 eligible countries (from 25 May 2026 — check eta.gov.lk for the current list). For other nationalities: USD 35 (standard, 48-hour processing) / USD 55 (express, 24-hour processing). Double-entry ETA available at higher fee.

Duration: Single entry: 30 days, extendable twice to maximum 90 days. Double entry: 30 days per entry. Valid 6 months from issue date.

Eligibility

Most nationalities for tourism, visiting family, short business trips, and transit. Check eta.gov.lk for country-specific requirements.

Processing time

24–72 hours online. Print the approved ETA or have it on your phone.

Business Visa (Work Visa)

💡 Employers registered with the Board of Investment (BOI) have a streamlined approval process at the BOI One-Stop Service Unit. Work visa must be obtained BEFORE starting employment — penalty for working without a valid work visa.

Resident Guest Visa (Retirement/Long-Term Residence)

Foreign nationals aged 55+ who can demonstrate sufficient funds for self-support in Sri Lanka. Also available to some younger applicants with investment or property purchase.

💡 One of the most affordable and straightforward retirement visa options in Asia. Holder cannot work in Sri Lanka. Must remit a minimum of USD 250/month into Sri Lanka through banking channels.

Student Visa

Foreign students enrolled full-time at a Sri Lanka-accredited educational institution.

💡 Working on a student visa is generally not permitted. Must maintain active enrolment. Sri Lanka has several English-medium universities attracting international students.
