Public Transport Overview

Sri Lanka's public transport is served by Sri Lanka Railways (SLR) for intercity travel and Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) buses for urban and rural routes. In Colombo, an elevated LRT (Light Rail Transit) is under construction but not yet operational as of 2026. The main public modes in Colombo are SLTB buses, private buses, and the Kelani Valley railway line. Tuk-tuks (three-wheelers) are ubiquitous for short urban journeys. The Colombo–Kandy and Colombo–Galle railway lines are iconic scenic routes used by both tourists and commuters.

Taxi & Rideshare

Metered taxis are rare. Street taxis (non-app) negotiate fares — always agree before boarding. PickMe (Lanka's dominant ride-hailing app) and Uber both operate in Colombo, offering cars and tuk-tuks with upfront pricing. PickMe also serves Kandy, Galle, and other major cities. Rideshare (Long-distance)

PickMe is Sri Lanka's dominant ride-hailing platform — cars, tuk-tuks, vans, and delivery. More drivers and better rural coverage than Uber. Uber operates cars only in Colombo and suburbs. Both show upfront fares. PickMe can also be used for tuk-tuks (PickMe Tuk) with fixed metered pricing — the safest way to avoid tuk-tuk overcharging.

Cycling

Cycling infrastructure is extremely limited in Colombo and major cities. Not recommended as a primary commute mode due to heavy traffic, poor road surfaces, and lack of cycle lanes. However, cycling is popular in tourist areas: coastal cycling along Galle Face to Wellawatta, Galle Fort surroundings, the Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya–Dambulla), and the Jaffna peninsula. Rental bikes widely available in tourist areas (LKR 300–600/day).

Intercity Trains

Sri Lanka Railways operates scenic intercity routes. The Colombo–Kandy Intercity Express (2.5 hours) and the Colombo–Ella hill country route (5.5 hours through tea estates) are among the most beautiful train journeys in Asia. Book reserved seats at stations or via RAILDEY mobile app for popular routes. Night trains to Jaffna (8 hours) are popular with budget travellers. Intercity buses (private operators: Luxury Buses, Expressways) serve all major routes with air conditioning.

Driving

Sri Lanka drives on the LEFT. Speed limits: 60 km/h in urban areas, 70 km/h on rural roads, 100 km/h on expressways. The Southern Expressway (E01) connects Colombo to Matara (southern coast) in 2.5 hours — major time saver. Central Expressway connects Colombo towards Kandy. Road quality varies significantly: expressways are excellent; rural mountain roads can be narrow and potholed. Traffic in Colombo is severe during rush hours (7–9am, 4–7pm). Three-wheelers, buses, and pedestrians mix chaotically — defensive driving essential.

Airports

Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB/BIA), 30 km north of Colombo in Katunayake. Handles 99% of international flights. Airport Express Highway connects BIA to Colombo (45–60 minutes via E03 expressway). From airport to Colombo: PickMe/Uber (~LKR 2,500–3,500), airport taxi (fixed rate LKR 3,000–4,000 from airport counter), Aero Lanka express shuttle, or SLTB Airbus (cheap but slow, LKR 150). Domestic flights from Ratmalana Airport (RML) south of Colombo. Mattala Airport (HRI) near Hambantota — limited service.
