Banking in Ukraine
Recommended banks, payment culture and credit score basics.
Ukraine has a highly digitised retail banking sector — PrivatBank's Privat24 app, monobank, and the instant transfer system (Pay by Phone / instant transfers between banks) set a very high standard for mobile banking UX. The currency is the Ukrainian Hryvnia (UAH). Since February 2022, the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) has imposed martial law currency controls: daily cash withdrawal limits (UAH 100,000/day for individuals); restrictions on foreign currency purchase; and strict documentation requirements for large international transfers. All major banks continue to operate — digital infrastructure has proven resilient throughout the conflict. Account opening for foreign nationals requires a valid passport, Ukrainian INN (Individual Tax Number — ідентифікаційний номер платника податків), proof of Ukrainian address or registration, and a Ukrainian mobile phone number. The INN can be obtained at any State Tax Service office within 1–5 business days.

Payment culture
Ukraine has one of the most advanced card and mobile payment ecosystems in Eastern Europe. Contactless Visa and Mastercard payments are accepted at virtually all urban merchants: supermarkets (Silpo, ATB, Novus, Fora), petrol stations, restaurants, cafes, pharmacies, and most public transport ticketing machines. Apple Pay and Google Pay work throughout Ukraine with linked Ukrainian bank cards. Pay by Phone (Плати за номером) — instant free UAH transfers between any Ukrainian bank accounts by mobile number — is universally used. Cash (UAH) is still essential for: markets (ринки), rural areas, smaller service providers, and as an emergency reserve (power outages, air raid shelter situations). Always keep UAH 2,000–5,000 in cash. EUR and USD cash is accepted informally by some landlords and property agents but not in formal commerce.
Cash access
ATMs are widely available in Kyiv, Lviv, Odesa, Dnipro, and all major cities. PrivatBank has the largest ATM network (7,000+ machines nationwide). ATMs in bombed or occupied areas: unavailable — this is a genuine operational concern for expats working in conflict-affected regions. NBU martial-law daily cash withdrawal limit: UAH 100,000/day per individual. Foreign card (Visa/Mastercard) withdrawals at Ukrainian ATMs: generally work, subject to your home bank's international fees. Keep UAH 5,000–10,000 in cash at home as an emergency reserve — power outages during air raids can take ATMs offline temporarily.
Ukrainian Bureau of Credit Histories (УБКІ — Українське бюро кредитних історій)
The main credit bureaux in Ukraine are UBKI (ubki.ua), Credit Bureau Ukraine, and International Bureau of Credit Histories (МБКІ). Individuals can request their credit report online at ubki.ua using their INN (tax number). Authentication via BankID is available for most users.
Free annual check: One free credit report per year from each bureau under Ukrainian law. UBKI free check available at ubki.ua.
Foreign nationals arriving in Ukraine have no local credit history. Banks assess creditworthiness through income documentation, employment contract, and banking tenure. A 6–12 month history of regular salary deposits at PrivatBank or Raiffeisen is the fastest path to credit access. Note: monobank's instalment product (monobank частини) can also help build a credit record. Foreign credit histories (EU, UK, US) are not automatically recognised.
International transfers
International transfers from Ukraine are subject to NBU martial-law currency controls introduced in February 2022. As of 2025–2026: outward transfers for individuals from countries at war are restricted — consult your bank for current limits (rules change frequently). Incoming transfers: foreign salary and income can be received via SWIFT at Raiffeisen, Sense Bank, or PrivatBank. Wise (wise.com): partially available — check current UAH support status. Western Union and MoneyGram: operate in Ukraine. Large incoming transfers (over USD 10,000): require source-of-funds documentation. For regular international salary receipt, use USD/EUR SWIFT to Raiffeisen or Sense Bank USD/EUR accounts, then convert to UAH as needed.
