EU-candidate country with a resilient tech sector, very low day-to-day costs by European standards, rich culture, and a 2026 expat experience shaped by martial law, air alerts, reconstruction, and fast-moving rules.
Family Rights & Benefits
Maternity, parental leave and child benefits in Ukraine.
Family rights combine Labour Code protections, social benefits, civil registration, and wartime service disruption. Foreign families should document every civil-status event carefully with apostilles/translations for cross-border use.
Pregnancy and childbirth leave
Before birth: Typically 70 calendar days before expected birth
After birth: Typically 56 days after birth, longer for complicated/multiple births
Job protection: Pregnant employees and parents have dismissal protections, subject to legal exceptions and wartime context.
Childcare leave
Max duration: Generally until child reaches age 3, with possible extensions in limited cases
Split rules / Elterngeld: Can be used by mother, father, grandparents, or guardians depending on employment/legal status.
Benefits
Pregnancy and Childbirth Allowance (Dopomoga u zv'yazku z vahitnistyu ta pologamy)
100% of average daily earnings for the maternity leave period (70 days pre-natal + 56 days post-natal = 126 days standard; 70+70 = 140 days for complicated births; 84+70 = 154 days for multiple births). Paid from the Social Insurance Fund (FSS).
Duration: 126 days (standard); 140 days (complicated birth); 154 days (multiple births)
Eligibility: Employed women registered with the Social Insurance Fund and meeting minimum contribution requirements. Wartime conditions may affect processing — check with FSS or employer HR for current procedures.
How to apply: Notify employer. Employer submits documentation to the Social Insurance Fund (fss.gov.ua). Documents: sick leave certificate for pregnancy and childbirth (lykarnyanyi lystok), employment records, average earnings calculation. FSS pays the employer who pays the employee.
This benefit is SEPARATE from the one-time UAH 50,000 childbirth payment. The maternity leave allowance is a 100% earnings-replacement benefit for the leave period. Wartime disruptions may affect normal processing timelines — maintain contact with your employer's HR throughout.
Childbirth Benefit (eMaliatko / Diia)
UAH 50,000 one-time payment per birth (for children born from 1 January 2026; applies to Ukrainian citizens/residents — foreign nationals' eligibility depends on legal residence status and social insurance registration)
Duration: One-time payment
Eligibility: Ukrainian citizens and legally resident parents whose child is born in Ukraine from 1 January 2026. Foreign nationals should verify eligibility with the Pension Fund of Ukraine before the expected birth date.
How to apply: Submit application through the eMaliatko service in the Diia app or in person at a Pension Fund of Ukraine service centre. Required: birth certificate, parents' identity documents, bank account details. Apply within the prescribed period after birth.
The UAH 50,000 payment (increased from the previous tiered system) is the standard one-time amount for 2026. Wartime conditions may affect processing times. For children born abroad to Ukrainians, submit official foreign birth documents to the Pension Fund.
Monthly Childcare Benefit
Approximately UAH 1,700–2,600/month (means-tested; rates updated periodically — verify at Pension Fund of Ukraine pfund.gov.ua)
Duration: Until child reaches age 3 (or longer for children with disabilities)
Eligibility: Parents or caregivers on childcare leave who are registered with the social insurance system. Both working and non-working parents may qualify at different rates.
How to apply: Apply through the Diia app or at the Pension Fund service centre with birth certificate, leave confirmation from employer (if applicable), and bank account details.
Benefit amounts are indexed to the minimum subsistence level and updated periodically. Wartime social support programmes may affect rates — check pfund.gov.ua for current figures.
Sick child leave
Employees can receive sick leave to care for a child under medical rules; HR documentation is required.
Birth registration
Register birth through civil registry/eMaliatko where available; obtain multiple certificates and apostilles/translations if child will need foreign citizenship documents.
Childcare rights
Public kindergarten and school access depends on residence/address and capacity; displaced families and shelter capacity affect availability.
