Banking in Armenia

Recommended banks, payment culture and credit score basics.

Armenia has a modern, competitive banking sector with strong mobile apps, AMD/USD/EUR multi-currency accounts, instant domestic transfers via the ArCa network, and wide card acceptance in Yerevan. The influx of internationally mobile residents since 2022 has made Armenian banks significantly more experienced with foreign-source income and compliance documentation. That said, compliance checks are stricter than many newcomers expect — especially for foreign-source income, crypto proceeds, and recent arrivals without a residence card. For a basic AMD current account linked to a local employer or rental payments, the process is typically straightforward with a passport and local phone number.

Payment culture

Cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Idram QR codes are widely accepted in Yerevan supermarkets, restaurants, and retail. The ArCa network (Armenian Card System) enables instant interbank domestic transfers — used for rent, salaries, and business payments between any Armenian bank accounts. Idram is the dominant mobile wallet for merchant QR payments; Telcell is an alternative wallet for bill payments and transfers. Cash (Armenian Dram, AMD) is still important for markets, taxis booked outside apps, small towns, and building management fees. USD and EUR are accepted as a secondary currency at some shops and by many landlords — always negotiate whether rent is quoted in AMD or USD.

Cash access

ATMs (банկոմ) are widespread in Yerevan and available in all regional cities. Ameriabank, Ardshinbank, and ACBA Bank have the widest ATM networks. International Visa and Mastercard withdrawals work at most ATMs — foreign-card fees are typically AMD 500–1,500 per withdrawal plus your home bank's charge. Avoid dynamic currency conversion at ATMs — always choose AMD. When travelling to remote villages or trekking areas, carry sufficient cash — ATMs in small towns can run out, especially around Vardavar and other major holidays.

ACRA (Armenian Credit Reporting Agency)

Request your credit report at acra.am — individual reports are available online with Armenian ID or through the ACRA portal. Banks access ACRA when assessing loans, mortgages, and large credit applications.

Foreign credit scores do not transfer to Armenia. Armenian banks assess creditworthiness through local income, account history, tax residency documentation, residence status, and collateral. A clean ACRA record is required for mortgage and car loan applications. New arrivals typically need 6–12 months of Armenian account history before being considered for credit products.

International transfers

SWIFT transfers are available at all major Armenian banks. Standard fees: AMD 5,000–15,000 per outgoing SWIFT transfer plus correspondent bank charges. Incoming SWIFT transfers require source-of-funds documentation for large amounts. Wise works well for sending money abroad from Armenia — use your Armenian account to fund a Wise transfer in AMD or USD. Wise cannot receive AMD directly. Revolut is available but not all services work in Armenia — verify before relying on it. For USD and EUR receipts from abroad, request your bank's SWIFT/BIC and account number; many Armenian banks have US or EU correspondent relationships.
