Fake payment link on List.am or Telegram marketplace
A common Yerevan marketplace scam: a "buyer" agrees to purchase your item and sends a link claiming to be from the bank or courier (Haypost, CDEK) to "receive" the payment — the link asks for your card number, expiry, and CVV.
⚡ Card number stolen and used for unauthorised transactions AMD 50,000–500,000+ within minutes; card cancellation and replacement takes 5–10 business days; funds recovery uncertain.
✅ Never enter your card number, CVV, or PIN to receive money — legitimate bank transfers do not require the recipient's card number on a third-party website. Share only your Armenian account IBAN for receiving transfers. For cash sales: meet in a public place (coffee shop, mall) rather than at home.
Losing money at street or unlicensed currency exchange points
Street exchangers (often outside Yerevan markets or small kiosks) may offer slightly better-looking rates but use sleight-of-hand counting, counterfeit notes, or simply a worse rate than licensed booths.
⚡ AMD 5,000–50,000 loss on a single exchange; counterfeit notes that cannot be deposited; no receipt for source-of-funds documentation.
✅ Use licensed exchange offices (visible license displayed, receipt issued — ask before exchanging) or bank branch exchange desks in Yerevan. Count your notes before leaving the counter. Check the live AMD/USD rate at cba.am before exchanging to know the fair market rate.
Losing access to your Armenian SIM — locked out of banking and services
Your Armenian phone number is the recovery factor for bank app logins (Ameriabank, Inecobank, IDBank mobile), digital wallets (Idram, Telcell), government portals (e-gov.am), taxi apps (GG, Yandex Go), and delivery apps. If your SIM is lost, stolen, or deactivated, all these services become inaccessible simultaneously.
⚡ Locked out of your bank account and unable to pay rent; unable to call a taxi; unable to access Armenian government portals; possible identity theft if the SIM is ported by a scammer.
✅ Register your SIM with your passport at the operator's branch (Viva, Team Telecom, Ucom) — unregistered SIMs are harder to recover. Save: the operator's customer service number (*7777 Viva, *8080 Ucom, *7676 Team) and your SIM account PIN. Update recovery email and backup phone on all banking apps. Keep a second SIM from a different operator for emergencies.
Eastern and southern border areas carry active security risks — follow embassy advisories
Following the 2023 collapse of the Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) enclave, Armenia and Azerbaijan initialed a peace agreement in August 2025 (US-mediated, known as "TRIPP"), but as of mid-2026 it remains unsigned and unratified — border demarcation in Syunik is incomplete and key issues around POWs, displaced Armenians, and transit routes are unresolved. Armenian parliamentary elections are scheduled for June 2026. The border areas in Syunik, Gegharkunik, and Tavush provinces experienced armed incidents as recently as 2024 and border line demarcation is still in progress. The border with Turkey remains closed. The EU Monitoring Mission (EUMA) is present in Armenia (mandate extended through February 2027), but its mandate does not include intervening in incidents.
⚡ Risk of entering an unmarked or militarised border zone without realising it; road access to some southern routes may be subject to ad hoc security closures. Political uncertainty around the peace ratification timeline adds risk. Travel insurance may not cover incidents in designated conflict-risk zones.
✅ Register with your home country's embassy in Yerevan immediately after arrival (UK: gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/armenia; US: step.state.gov). Follow your embassy's current travel advice for Syunik, Gegharkunik, and Tavush. Stay on main roads in border provinces and in established tourist accommodation. Monitor your embassy advisory before any regional road trip. Avoid the immediate border zone unless travelling on established tourist routes with local knowledge. The interior of Armenia (Yerevan, Dilijan, Lake Sevan, Tatev monastery area via main roads) remains safe for expat daily life.
Renting without working air conditioning in summer
Yerevan summers (July–August) frequently reach 35–40°C. South-facing apartments on upper floors without reliable AC or cross-ventilation become very difficult to live and work in.
⚡ Poor sleep quality; heat stress; remote work productivity loss; AMD 20,000–60,000 expense to purchase and install a wall-unit AC if the apartment lacks one.
✅ Test the AC unit during your viewing — check that it cools effectively, not just that it runs. Ask which direction the main windows face. If buying AC, confirm with the landlord that installation is permitted and who pays — clarify this in the lease addendum.
