Payment Culture
Bulgaria is a mixed cash and card society. Card payments (Visa, Mastercard) are accepted in most city shops, restaurants, and supermarkets. Cash is still preferred or required in smaller towns, markets, taxis, and rural areas. Always carry 20–50 BGN in cash as a backup.
ATM Tips
ATMs (банкомати) are widely available in Sofia and other cities. Use bank-branded ATMs (DSK, UniCredit, Fibank) to minimise fees. Avoid standalone "Euronet" ATMs — they charge high conversion fees. Revolut and Wise are popular among expats for fee-free withdrawals.
Exchange Tips
The Bulgarian Lev is pegged to the Euro at exactly 1 EUR = 1.95583 BGN — this rate never changes. Avoid airport exchange bureaus. Use bank branches or Unicredit/DSK exchange desks for fair rates. Revolut and Wise offer the best rates for international transfers.
