Recycling & Waste in Bulgaria
Bin system, bottle deposits, special disposal, and common mistakes.
Bulgaria's recycling infrastructure is developing but significantly lags behind Western European standards. The country has been subject to EU infringement proceedings for waste management shortfalls. In cities, coloured recycling bins are placed in most residential areas. Recycling compliance is lower than in Germany or Scandinavia, but improving with younger generations. The EU-funded "separate collection" system (разделно събиране) has expanded significantly since 2015. In rural areas, recycling infrastructure is very limited.

DRS in development — no national scheme yet (voluntary RVMs at some supermarkets) — Bottle Deposit System
Bulgaria does not yet have a mandatory national deposit return system. Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1 January 2026 (1 BGN = €0.511292 at the fixed conversion rate). A draft amendment to the Waste Management Act establishing a national DRS was submitted to parliament on 21 January 2026 and is under consideration, but is facing opposition from industry associations. The future national DRS, once enacted, is expected to cover plastic (PET) bottles, metal cans, and glass containers between 0.1L and 3L, managed by a state National Deposit Operator (NDO). Some supermarkets (Kaufland, Lidl) have voluntarily installed reverse vending machines (RVMs) that issue eco-vouchers as a shopping discount — but this is not a statutory deposit scheme.
No statutory deposit currently in place. Voluntary supermarket eco-vouchers where available: small amounts (equivalent to a few euro-cents) per container — store credit only. Official deposit amounts for the national DRS have not yet been confirmed — industry discussions suggest ~€0.10 per container when the scheme launches.
Use the voluntary reverse vending machines at Kaufland, Lidl, Billa, and other participating supermarkets where available. Insert the container, receive an eco-voucher redeemable at checkout. Not all locations have machines — check supermarket entrances.
Special Disposal
Collection points at major supermarkets (Kaufland, Billa, Lidl) — look for the yellow WEEE bin. MediaMarkt, Technopolis, and electronics stores accept old electronics. Sofia has dedicated WEEE collection centres.
Bulky electronics (TV, washing machine, fridge): contact the municipality or the WEEE operator for collection. Phone manufacturer take-back programmes available.
Battery collection boxes at supermarkets, electronics stores, pharmacies, and some office buildings. Look for the battery recycling symbol.
Never dispose of batteries in regular waste — they contain hazardous materials. Both household batteries and car batteries have collection systems.
Specialised collection points operated by municipalities — typically 1–2 collection events per year. Check Sofia Municipality website (sofia.bg) for dates and locations.
Never pour chemicals down the drain. Store until you can access a collection event.
Return unused medicines to any pharmacy (аптека). Do not dispose in regular waste or flush down the toilet.
Pharmacies are legally required to accept returned medicines under the take-back programme.
Petrol stations, car repair shops, and tyre dealers. Car battery shops must accept returns.
Illegal to dispose of motor oil or car batteries in regular waste. All car repair shops required to accept used motor oil.
Textile collection boxes (often blue or red) throughout residential areas. Humana, Bulgarian Red Cross, and other charities have donation points.
Worn or unusable textiles go to textile collection (repurposed as industrial rags or recycled). Good condition clothing can be donated.
Schedule municipal collection through your local district office (районна администрация). Some areas have designated bulky waste drop-off points.
Illegal dumping is widespread but carries fines. Large pieces of furniture: contact your municipality for scheduled collection. OLX.bg Marketplace is good for selling/giving away usable items.
Bulk Waste
Contact your local municipality (for Sofia: contact the relevant районна администрация). Scheduled collection possible for large items. Some districts have designated bulky waste areas for occasional drop-offs. Fees may apply for large volumes.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- ! Placing food waste in the yellow recycling bin — only packaging, not food residue
- ! Mixing glass with plastic and paper — glass has its own green bin
- ! Throwing batteries and electronics in regular waste — they require special collection
- ! Disposing of medicines in regular waste — return to pharmacy
- ! Using wrong bin colour — colour-coding varies slightly by operator; check the bin label
- ! Not rinsing plastic bottles before recycling — contamination reduces recyclability
Fines & Enforcement
Illegal dumping (uncontrolled waste disposal) carries fines of approximately €150–€510 for individuals (converted from the former 300–1,000 BGN following Bulgaria's eurozone accession on 1 January 2026). Businesses face higher fines. Municipal environment inspectors patrol for violations. Most cities have hotlines to report illegal dumping.
