⏱️ Municipal ясли (nurseries) have long waitlists in Sofia — register immediately after birth. Apply to multiple municipally-run nurseries simultaneously.

Начално / Основно училище

Ages: 6–14 years (Grades 1–7) · Language: Bulgarian

Register at the local state school in your catchment area (according to residential address). Documents: birth certificate, vaccination record, proof of address, medical certificate. Registration opens in spring for September start. Children must know basic Bulgarian or be enrolled in intensive Bulgarian language support.

Education is compulsory from age 5 (preparatory class in kindergarten) through to age 16. State schools are free but families typically spend 200–500 BGN/year on textbooks, supplies, and school activities. English language teaching starts from Grade 1 in most Sofia schools. Second foreign language introduced around Grade 5.

Admission to specialised high schools (гимназии) is competitive — based on entrance exams after Grade 7. Language gymnasiums, math gymnasiums, and science gymnasiums are prestigious and entry is competitive. Standard secondary schools accept by catchment area.

Many Sofia gymnasiums specialise in languages, mathematics, or sciences. Foreign language gymnasiums (Немска гимназия, Английска гимназия, Френска гимназия) are highly regarded. Graduates sit state matriculation exams (Държавни зрелостни изпити — ДЗИ) to qualify for university.

International Schools

Sofia has several international schools with English instruction: Anglo-American School of Sofia (AAS — IB curriculum, leading choice for expats), Sofia International School (SIS), Bright Minds (smaller, bilingual). Anglo-American School fees: ~25,000–35,000 BGN/year. Some international schools offer IB Diploma Programme. Plovdiv, Varna, and Burgas have fewer international school options — most expats with children outside Sofia use local schools with Bulgarian language support.

University

Tuition fee

EU/Bulgarian students: 600–1,500 BGN/year (€300–770). Non-EU students: 2,000–6,000 BGN/year. Medical degree (English-medium): 9,000–13,000 BGN/year. Sofia University (СУ), UNWE, Technical University of Sofia are the main state universities.

Semester fee

No separate semester fee — tuition fee covers enrollment. Students pay for textbooks (100–300 BGN/year) and optional study materials.

Student visa

Non-EU students require a Type D student visa. Apply at the Bulgarian embassy before arrival. Once in Bulgaria, apply for student residence permit at Migration Directorate. Requires university enrollment confirmation, proof of funds, accommodation, health insurance.

Health insurance

EU students: EHIC card covers basic emergency healthcare. Non-EU students: must purchase private health insurance (typically 200–500 BGN/year). Students enrolled in Bulgarian universities can purchase affordable state health insurance coverage.

Application process

Apply directly to universities. Bulgarian universities use a points system based on matriculation exam results and entrance exams. Foreign students apply with apostilled, translated diplomas through NARIC Bulgaria. Deadline typically June–July for September start.
