Employment Agency

Register at your local Labour Office (Дирекция "Бюро по труда") in person. Bring passport/ID, education certificates, and employment history. You will receive a registration card and access to job listings, training, and employment support services.

💼 Work Permits

EU Citizens

EU/EEA citizens have full freedom of movement and work rights in Bulgaria. No work permit required. Must register address within 30 days and obtain EU registration certificate for stays over 3 months.

Non-EU Citizens

Non-EU citizens require a work permit before starting employment. The employer typically applies on the employee's behalf at the Employment Agency. Process takes 1–3 months. A Type D long-stay visa (90+ days) is required first, then a temporary residence permit.

EU Blue Card

EU Blue Card available for highly qualified non-EU workers. Requirements: recognised university degree + employment contract with minimum salary of 1.5x the average gross salary in Bulgaria (approximately BGN 4,017/month gross in 2026, ~€2,054/month or €23,500/year). Processed at Migration Directorate.

Freelancer Visa

No specific digital nomad visa. Non-EU remote workers often use the tourist visa (90/180 days) or must establish a Bulgarian company (EOOD) to legally work long-term. EU citizens can work as freelancers after registering their self-employment with the NRA.

⏱️ Work Culture

Typical hours 8 hours/day, 40 hours/week standard. Lunch break 30–60 minutes usually between 12:00–14:00. Some companies have flexible hours, especially in IT sector. Remote work became more accepted post-2020.

Annual leave Minimum 20 days paid annual leave by law. Many companies offer 20–25 days. Additional days may be negotiated for seniority. All public holidays (around 15 days) are additional to annual leave.

Sick leave First 3 days of sick leave: 70% of salary paid by employer. From day 4: 80% paid by National Social Security Institute (НОИ). Doctor's sick note (болничен лист) required from the first day for payment.

Trial period Trial period (изпитателен срок) up to 6 months for positions requiring special qualifications, up to 3 months for standard positions. Either party can terminate without notice during trial.

Notice period Minimum notice period: 30 days (general rule). Up to 3 months can be agreed in contract. Management positions typically 3 months.

Salary range Significant variation by sector and region. IT sector: 3,000–10,000+ BGN/month. Finance/accounting: 1,500–4,000 BGN/month. Healthcare: 1,200–3,500 BGN/month. Retail/hospitality: 1,200–1,900 BGN/month. Sofia salaries are 20–40% higher than other cities. Minimum wage 2026: BGN 1,213/month (€620, effective January 1 — up from BGN 1,077 in 2025).

Pay frequency Monthly, usually paid on a specific date between the 1st and 30th of the following month. Some companies pay twice monthly.

📝 Application Tips

CV format: Europass CV format is widely used in Bulgaria. Include a photo (still common practice). Bulgarian CVs list education first for recent graduates. Experienced professionals lead with work history. Keep to 1–2 pages. No need to include personal info beyond name, contact details, and location.

Cover letter: Expected

Language: Most corporate jobs require some English proficiency (B2+). IT, finance, and international company positions often conducted primarily in English. Bulgarian language required for government, healthcare, law, and customer-facing roles. Russian is understood by older professionals. German and French are valued in manufacturing sector.

Interviews: Bulgarians value directness but also formality in initial interviews. Arrive on time. Firm handshake. Address interviewers formally (с господин/госпожо + surname) until invited otherwise. Salary discussions are common in first or second interview. Follow up with a brief thank-you email. Multi-round processes common in larger companies.
