Bulgaria is the oldest state in Europe (founded 681 AD), a member of the European Union since 2007, and one of the most affordable countries for expats in the EU.
Key Documents Checklist
Gather these before and after moving to Bulgaria.
Required for entry, address registration, bank account opening, and most official processes. Non-EU citizens must ensure their passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond their intended stay.
EU citizens can use their national identity card instead of a passport for entry and most registration purposes within Bulgaria.
Proof of registered permanent address (постоянен адрес) or current address (настоящ адрес) at Rayonna Uprava (Районна управа). Required for almost all official processes. Must be completed within 30 days of arrival.
The 10-digit Bulgarian personal identification number. EU/EEA residents receive an EGN upon registering their address. Non-EU residents receive a LNCH (ЛНЧ — Personal Number of a Foreigner) upon obtaining a residence permit. Required for banking, healthcare, employment, and all official interactions.
EU/EEA citizens who intend to stay more than 3 months must register at the Migration Directorate and receive this certificate. Required for long-term residence and obtaining an EGN.
Non-EU citizens must apply for a temporary or permanent residence permit at the Migration Directorate (Дирекция "Миграция") within the Ministry of Interior. Types: Type D visa → temporary residence permit.
Required for school enrollment, family benefit applications, citizenship applications, and marriage. Foreign birth certificates require an apostille and certified Bulgarian translation.
Required for various family administrative processes, health insurance registration of spouse, and tax filing. Foreign certificates require apostille and certified Bulgarian translation.
Written employment contract required by law. Must be registered with the National Revenue Agency (НАП) within 3 days of starting work. Required for work permit applications, visa renewals, and social insurance.
University degrees and professional qualifications must be recognised by NARIC Bulgaria (Национален център за информация и документация — НАЦИД) for use in regulated professions. Apostille and certified translation required.
Required for residence permit applications, certain employment positions, and citizenship applications. Must be recent (usually not older than 3–6 months). Foreign certificates need apostille and certified translation.
Proof of health insurance with the National Health Insurance Fund (НЗОК). Required for accessing the public healthcare system. Employees are registered automatically by their employer.
Required document for any registered vehicle in Bulgaria. Must be carried at all times while driving.
Required when authorising a third party to act on your behalf for property purchase, company registration, or other legal matters. Must be completed at a Bulgarian notary.
📜 What is an Apostille?
An apostille is an official certification that validates a document for international use. It is issued by a designated authority in the country where the document was issued (usually a court or government office). Required for documents from Hague Convention member states.
🌍 Certified Translations
Certified translations must be done by a sworn/authorised translator. In Bulgaria, only translations by officially registered translators are accepted by government offices. Keep originals — they may be returned after verification.
