Bulgarian (Български) is a South Slavic language written in the Cyrillic script. It is the official language of Bulgaria and spoken by approximately 8 million people worldwide. For expats, Bulgarian presents a unique challenge: the Cyrillic alphabet must be learned first before any meaningful literacy in daily life is possible. The good news is that the 30-character Cyrillic alphabet can be learned in 2–3 hours. The language itself has no grammatical cases (unlike Russian or German) which makes basic communication relatively accessible. Bulgarian language proficiency at B1 level is required for citizenship after 5 years of residence.

Language Training for Employed/Integration Purposes
Bulgaria does not have a mandated nationwide integration course for most foreign residents. However, the Employment Agency and EU-funded programmes offer Bulgarian language courses for foreigners seeking employment.

Free or subsidised for registered unemployed persons through ESF (European Social Fund) programmes.
