Banking in Latvia
Recommended banks, payment culture and credit score basics.
Latvia's banking sector has undergone dramatic restructuring since 2018, when the third-largest bank (ABLV) was shut down and international sanctions were imposed over money-laundering concerns. The sector is now dominated by Scandinavian-owned banks (Swedbank and SEB) which are the most trusted and widely used. Latvia uses the Euro (since 2014), making SEPA transactions with other Eurozone countries free and instant. Opening a bank account requires a personas kods — this is essential to complete before attempting to bank. Latvia has a significant fintech scene, with Revolut, Wise, and local fintechs popular for international transfers.

Payment culture
Latvia is highly cashless — card payments are accepted in nearly all Riga shops, restaurants, and services. Contactless payment (bezkontakta maksājums) is standard and preferred. Visa and Mastercard are universally accepted. Apple Pay and Google Pay are widely supported. For small amounts, some smaller shops and market vendors may prefer cash. The Latvian instant payment system (SEPA Instant) is now broadly available — major banks support instant SEPA transfers 24/7. For person-to-person transfers, bank account transfers are standard (unlike Denmark's MobilePay). Viva Wallet, Revolut, and Wise are popular for international transfers.
Cash access
ATMs (bankomāts) widely available in Riga shopping centres, banks, petrol stations, and streets. Swedbank and SEB ATMs are free for their customers. Third-party ATMs charge €2–4/withdrawal. Cash is still needed for markets, small rural shops, and some services. However, 95%+ of Riga transactions are cashless — you can manage comfortably on €20–50 of cash per week.
Kredītu reģistrs (Credit Registry at Latvijas Banka)
Request your credit history report from Latvijas Banka's Kredītu reģistrs at kredituregistrs.lv. You can get one free report per year. Banks and credit providers check this registry when assessing loan and credit card applications.
Free annual check: One free report per year at kredituregistrs.lv.
Latvia's credit registry records loan payment history, credit cards, and financial obligations. New arrivals have no credit history — not negative but may make loan applications harder. Build history by having a bank account, regular income, and paid bills. Negative entries (late payments, defaults) remain for several years. Being registered in the credit registry with good payment history significantly improves loan prospects.
International transfers
SEPA transfers within EU/EEA are free or very low cost from Latvian banks. For non-SEPA (outside EU/EEA), Wise gives the best exchange rates and lowest fees. Swedbank and SEB charge €20–35 for SWIFT transfers. Citadele also charges for non-SEPA transfers. For remittances to Eastern Europe, Western Union and MoneyGram outlets are available. Crypto transfers are increasingly used for cross-border transfers among tech workers.
