Microchipping: €15–40. Rabies vaccination: €20–40. EU Pet Passport: €20–40 from vet. Health certificate for non-EU travel: €50–100. Vet registration in Latvia: €30–60 for initial visit. Pet import from non-EU country: additional documentation and potential border inspection. Import from EU country with valid EU Pet Passport: no additional fees.
🐕 Dog Tax / Registration
Dog registration is required in Riga and most Latvian municipalities. Riga municipality fee: approximately €15–30/year per dog. Some municipalities charge differently. Unregistered dogs may result in fines.
Register with a local veterinarian (veterinārārsts) upon arrival. The Latvian Food and Veterinary Service (Pārtikas un veterinārais dienests — PVD) oversees veterinary practice. Vet clinics are plentiful in Riga and most towns. Average vet visit in Latvia: €25–60.
📋 Relocation Process
1. Ensure pet has ISO-standard microchip (15-digit, ISO 11784/11785) implanted BEFORE rabies vaccination. 2. Vaccinate against rabies (minimum 21 days before travel for first-time vaccination). 3. Obtain EU Pet Passport from your vet (EU countries) or official health certificate (non-EU countries — Form IMSOC or equivalent). 4. For non-EU origins: the official health certificate must be issued by a government-authorised veterinarian within 10 days of travel. 5. Arrive in Latvia — no border quarantine, but documents may be checked by border control. 6. Register with a Latvian veterinarian (veterinārārsts) within the first weeks. 7. Register your dog with the Riga municipality (for Riga residents) — municipal dog registration is required. 8. For dogs classified as "potentially dangerous", complete the special registration with the municipality.
Latvia is fully compliant with EU pet travel regulations (EU Regulation 576/2013). EU Pet Passport is the standard document for pets travelling within the EU. For pets travelling from outside the EU (USA, Australia, etc.), additional requirements apply including tapeworm treatment for dogs from certain countries and a waiting period after rabies titration test. Cats and dogs may be transported on some Latvian trains and buses (in carriers). Airlines have specific pet cargo rules — check with your carrier.
