Latvia has a well-developed waste separation and recycling system, largely driven by EU environmental targets and the country's strong environmental culture. The national bottle deposit system (Depozīta sistēma) significantly reduces plastic and glass waste. Separate collection bins for paper, plastic, glass, and mixed waste are standard in Riga apartment blocks. Latvia consistently meets EU recycling targets. The national "Zaļais punkts" (Green Point) system coordinates special disposal of hazardous and electronic waste. Latvians take environmental responsibility seriously — proper waste sorting is expected.

Depozīta sistēma (Deposit Return System) — Bottle Deposit System
Latvia operates a highly effective bottle and can deposit return system. A €0.10 deposit is charged on most plastic bottles (PET), glass bottles, and aluminium cans at point of purchase. Return machines (depozīta automāts) in supermarkets give back your deposit.
€0.10 per eligible plastic bottle, glass bottle, or aluminium can. Look for the "Depozīts" logo on the container.
Deposit items must be returned undamaged with barcodes intact (not crushed). Return at deposit machines (depozīta automāts) inside or at the entrance of Rimi, Maxima, Lidl, and other major supermarkets. The machine prints a receipt that can be redeemed for cash or used as a supermarket voucher.
Special Disposal
Zaļais punkts (Green Point) collection points at major supermarkets (Rimi, Maxima, Elvi). Also: bring-back schemes at electronics retailers (Elko, Euronics, Data4). Small electronics at recycling collection points.
Latvia participates in the EU WEEE directive. Retailers selling electronics must accept old items of the same type for free disposal.
Battery collection boxes in most supermarkets, schools, and public buildings. Zaļais punkts collection points.
Never dispose of batteries in general waste — toxic heavy metals. Rechargeable batteries can also be returned to electronics retailers.
Any pharmacy (aptieka) — they accept expired or unused medications for safe disposal.
Never flush medicines down the toilet or put in general waste — pharmaceutical contamination of water is a serious environmental concern.

Contact your building management company (apsaimniekotājs) or municipality. Bulky waste collection days (smagsvara atkritumu izvešana) are organised in Riga neighbourhoods — check riga.lv for schedule.
Do not leave large items outside bins without arranging collection — this may result in a fine.
Textile collection containers in supermarket car parks (H&M collects, SIA Zaļais points containers). Charity shops (Humana, Red Cross second-hand shops) accept good-quality clothing.
Textile recycling is expanding in Latvia. Even damaged textiles can be dropped in collection containers for industrial recycling.
Collection boxes at hardware stores (Depo, Rimi) and Zaļais punkts points. Do not put in regular waste — contain mercury.
LED bulbs can go in general waste (no hazardous materials). Fluorescent and CFL bulbs contain mercury and must be separately collected.
Bulk Waste
Bulky waste (large furniture, appliances, mattresses) must be booked for collection. In Riga: contact Rīgas Serviss (rs.lv, +371 80004040) for collection booking. Annual free bulky waste collection days (bezmaksas smagsvara atkritumu savākšana) are organised in Riga districts — check riga.lv for the schedule. In other municipalities: contact local municipality for arrangements.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- ! Putting deposit bottles in recycling bins instead of the deposit machine — you lose your deposit and create sorting problems
- ! Not rinsing plastic containers before putting in yellow bin — food residue contaminates entire bin
- ! Throwing batteries or electronics in general waste bins — this is both illegal and environmentally harmful
- ! Putting pizza boxes (greasy) in paper recycling — they belong in general waste
- ! Disposing of garden waste in general bins in quantities that block the bin
- ! Ignoring building sorting requirements — buildings can face fines if sorting is poor, which flows back to residents
Fines & Enforcement
Improper waste disposal can result in administrative fines. For individuals: €35–350. For legal entities: €350–700. Illegal dumping of bulky waste: €140–700. These fines are enforced by municipal inspectors and are increasingly applied.

- → The deposit system (Depozīts) is very efficient — save up deposit items and return monthly for easy euro returns.
- → Many Riga supermarkets have deposit machines that accept both plastic and glass in the same machine.

- → Check rs.lv (Rīgas Serviss) for Riga-specific waste management rules, collection schedules, and bulky waste booking.
- → Many apartment blocks have a Zaļais punkts collection station in the courtyard for batteries, small electronics, and textiles.
- → Building management companies (apsaimniekotāji) are responsible for the bin area — if bins are overflowing or missing, contact them directly.
