Banking in Paraguay

Recommended banks, payment culture and credit score basics.

Paraguay's banking sector is supervised by the Banco Central del Paraguay (BCP) and is one of the most dollarized economies in South America — USD accounts are standard alongside PYG (Paraguayan guaraní) accounts and widely accepted for savings, rent, and property transactions. Brazilian reals (BRL) circulate informally in border departments. Foreign expats generally cannot open a full bank account on a tourist entry — a Cédula de Identidad paraguaya (issued after permanent residency approval) or documented transitional immigration status is required. An RUC number (Registro Único de Contribuyentes — tax ID from the SET) is needed for business accounts. Strong KYC/AML compliance means source-of-funds documentation is mandatory for significant deposits and wire transfers. The banking system is stable, modern, and expanding in digital services.

Payment culture

Cash (PYG and USD) remains the dominant payment method in Paraguay for everyday transactions. QR-code mobile payments are growing rapidly — PeiGo (linked to Banco Familiar) and Billetera Personal (from Claro) are the leading digital wallets for small-value payments and merchant QR codes. Card payments (Visa, Mastercard) are accepted at supermarkets (Stock, Superseis, BigG), shopping malls, petrol stations, and larger restaurants in Asunción and Ciudad del Este — but many smaller shops, markets, and all rural vendors are cash-only. USD is the parallel currency for rent and property — many rental contracts denominate in USD, while supermarkets and daily transactions are in PYG. BRL circulates informally in border departments (Alto Paraná, Amambay). Decline dynamic currency conversion (DCC) at ATMs — always choose to pay in PYG.

Cash access

RedBancard is Paraguay's shared ATM network — all major bank ATMs (Banco Familiar, Banco Continental, Banco Itaú, Sudameris) participate. ATMs are widely available in Asunción, Ciudad del Este, Encarnación, and Coronel Oviedo. Most ATMs dispense PYG only — visit a bank branch teller for USD cash withdrawals. USD cash can be exchanged at reputable casas de cambio in central Asunción (Calle Palma and surroundings). ATM withdrawal limits: typically PYG 1,000,000–3,000,000 (approx USD 130–400) per transaction. Use ATMs inside petrol stations or shopping centres — avoid standalone kiosk ATMs at night.

Informconf (main consumer credit bureau)

Informconf (informconf.com.py) is Paraguay's main private credit bureau, aggregating data from banks, utilities, stores, and lenders. Request your personal credit report at their website or office in Asunción (Avda. Mariscal López 3794). A cédula paraguaya or RUC is required to access your file. The Banco Central del Paraguay (BCP) also maintains a credit risk database (CEPEF) for registered bank lending.

Free annual check: Informconf charges a small fee for detailed credit reports (approximately PYG 50,000–100,000). A basic free check for negative records is available via the Informconf portal. The BCP CEPEF database can be queried through your bank.

Foreign credit history does not transfer to Paraguay. Your local credit file starts from zero on arrival. Avoid any default on bank accounts, utility bills, mobile phone contracts, or store credit — Informconf blacklisting affects rental applications, loan approvals, and business account opening. Build Paraguayan credit history through: salary-linked bank accounts, utility contracts in your name, and consistent on-time payment of all local obligations.

International transfers

Wise availability for PYG transfers varies by corridor — verify current routing at wise.com before relying on it for PYG. For USD-based international SWIFT transfers, Sudameris Bank and Banco Continental are the most experienced options (USD 20–50 per outbound wire). Regional transfers to Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay: local exchange houses (casas de cambio) in border regions often offer better rates than SWIFT for cross-border transactions. Remitly and Western Union are available for receiving funds in USD or PYG from abroad. Banks request source-of-funds documentation for incoming transfers above USD 10,000 under BCP AML regulations.
