Banking in Curaçao

Recommended banks, payment culture and credit score basics.

Banking in Curaçao is well-developed for a Caribbean island. The two dominant banks are MCB (Maduro & Curiel's Bank) and RBC Royal Bank of Canada, both offering full retail and business banking. The Caribbean guilder (XCG) replaced the Netherlands Antillean guilder (ANG) in 2025 and is pegged to the US dollar at US$1 = Cg 1.79, providing exchange rate stability. USD is widely accepted alongside XCG in tourist-facing businesses. Opening a local bank account normally requires valid residence status (VVA permit) and thorough KYC documentation — tourist visitors cannot open ordinary resident accounts. CBCS (Centrale Bank van Curaçao en Sint Maarten) regulates financial institutions.

Payment culture

Card payments (Visa/Mastercard) are widely accepted at supermarkets, restaurants, hotels, and shops in Willemstad. Cash (XCG or USD) is still needed for local markets, taxis, informal vendors, and smaller businesses. Contactless payment (tap to pay) is available on newer MCB and RBC cards. There is no local mobile payment app equivalent to the Netherlands' Tikkie — peer-to-peer payments are arranged by bank transfer or cash. ATMs are readily available in Willemstad; the outer areas of the island have fewer machines.

Cash access

ATMs are widely available in Willemstad and major shopping areas (Sambil Mall, Zuikertuin Town Center). Most ATMs dispense XCG; USD ATMs are available at Hato Airport and some hotels. Minimum withdrawal typically XCG 20. International debit and credit card withdrawals incur Curaçao bank fees of XCG 5–15 per transaction plus your home bank's foreign transaction fees.

No formal credit scoring system — bank underwriting

Curaçao does not have a formalised credit scoring system like the Netherlands (BKR) or the US (FICO). Banks assess creditworthiness based on income documentation, employment history, bank statements, and references.

Build a relationship with MCB or RBC early. Consistent salary deposits and responsible account management support mortgage and loan applications. Expats with no Curaçao credit history are assessed on home-country documentation, salary slips, and employment contract terms.

International transfers

SWIFT transfers from Curaçao: MCB (SWIFT: MCULCWCU), RBC (SWIFT: ROYCUS3N). Outgoing transfer fee: XCG 30–60 plus 1–3% currency conversion margin. Incoming international transfer: XCG 10–20 receiving fee. Wise is cheaper for EUR/USD leg transfers to Europe or North America — confirm XCG support before relying on it for salary receipt. For large incoming transfers (property sale, investment), source-of-funds documentation is required by CBCS AML rules. Western Union and MoneyGram are available for cash pickup transfers.
