Rental deposit scams targeting new arrivals
Fraudulent rental listings on Scooploop, Facebook, and Marktplaats collect deposits for properties that don't exist or belong to someone else.

✅ Do not bring, buy, or carry controlled substances. Never carry packages for others at the airport.
Offshore investment scams target Curaçao expats

VVA work permit is tied to a specific employer — changing jobs requires a new permit
The VVA (verblijfs- en werkvergunning) work and residence permit in Curaçao is issued for employment with a named employer. If you resign, are dismissed, or change employer, the permit is no longer valid for the new employment. Your new employer must initiate a fresh VVA application with Immigratiedienst Curaçao before you can legally start work.
⚡ Working for a different employer on an existing VVA is illegal. Risk of deportation, entry ban, and criminal charges. Processing a new VVA typically takes 1–3 months, during which you cannot legally work.
✅ Before accepting a new job, confirm your new employer has started the VVA application process. Maintain your existing job until the new permit is approved if at all possible. Consult a local immigration lawyer if your situation is complex.
30% expat tax ruling must be applied within 4 months
The 30% expat tax ruling (30% of salary tax-free) must be applied within 4 months of your employment start date. The missed deadline cannot be applied retroactively.

All Curaçao tax residents must file an annual income tax return (Aangifte Inkomstenbelasting) with the Belastingdienst Curaçao by 30 June each year. Curaçao levies income tax at progressive rates of 9.75%–46.5% on worldwide income. Non-filing and late filing attract automatic penalties.

Dengue fever is present year-round
Dengue fever is endemic in Curaçao with periodic outbreaks. No widely available vaccine. Symptoms: high fever, severe headache, joint pain.
⚡ Serious illness requiring hospitalisation. Severe dengue can be life-threatening.
✅ Use DEET-based repellent at dawn and dusk, install window screens, and eliminate standing water. See a GP immediately if symptoms appear.
"Island fever" — psychological isolation peaks at 3–9 months
Small-island geography, distance from home networks, and intense expat social dynamics cause "island fever" — stress, anxiety, and a sense of being trapped. Typically peaks at 3–9 months.

✅ Plan regular trips off-island. Build local friendships beyond the expat bubble. Seek teletherapy if symptoms persist.
A car is essential — public transport cannot meet daily needs
The Konvoi bus network covers only Willemstad city centre and is infrequent. Uber does not operate in Curaçao. Without a car you cannot reach beaches, supermarkets, or most workplaces.

✅ Buy or rent a car within your first 2 weeks. Budget for purchase, insurance (XCG 100–200/month WA), and fuel.
Contractor fraud — large deposits, no work
Unlicensed builders and tradespeople who take large deposits and disappear or do poor work are a significant risk in Curaçao.

✅ Always get 3 written quotes. Never pay more than 30% upfront. Use contractors recommended by the expat community.
Extreme UV index — sunburn within 15 minutes
Curaçao's UV index regularly reaches 11 (extreme). Severe sunburn possible within 15–20 minutes without protection.

AOV pension contributions are non-refundable on departure

Phone and WhatsApp phishing impersonating banks and government
Fraudsters impersonate MCB, RBC, Belastingdienst, and Immigratiedienst Curaçao via phone and WhatsApp to extract OTPs, passwords, and account details.
⚡ Bank account compromise and financial theft.
✅ No legitimate institution will ever ask for your password or OTP. Hang up immediately and call the institution directly using their official number.
Import duty (10–25%) significantly raises the cost of electronics and appliances
All imported goods carry import duty of 10–25% plus 9% OB. Electronics, appliances, and clothing are significantly more expensive than in the US or Europe.

No capital gains tax — a significant wealth accumulation advantage
Curaçao has no capital gains tax. Gains from the sale of shares, real estate, or other assets are generally not taxed at the individual level during your posting.

XCG is pegged to USD at 1.79, but old ANG cash is no longer everyday money
The Caribbean guilder became Curaçao legal tender in 2025 and is pegged at US$1 = Cg 1.79. USD is widely accepted in tourist-facing places, but old ANG cash is no longer normal day-to-day tender after the 2025 transition.
⚡ None — this is a positive feature for financial stability and budgeting.
✅ Use XCG for daily transactions, keep small USD only as backup, and exchange any legacy ANG notes through CBCS-approved channels rather than trying to spend them.
Legal path to Dutch citizenship after 5 years
After 5 years of continuous lawful residence in Curaçao, you may apply for Dutch naturalisation, granting a highly regarded Kingdom of the Netherlands passport.

WhatsApp is the default communication channel for everything
In Curaçao, WhatsApp is used to communicate with GPs, dentists, landlords, contractors, government offices, taxis, restaurants, and businesses.

AQUALECTRA outages — budget for power and water disruptions
AQUALECTRA is the monopoly provider of both electricity and drinking water in Curaçao. Power outages lasting 30 minutes to several hours occur several times per month in some districts. Tap water is treated and drinkable but pressure can be inconsistent in hillside areas. Most established homes have a cistern (regenbak) and backup generator — ask about these when renting.
