🧑💻 Freelancer / Self-Employed Guide
Steps to register:
- 1 1. Determine your business structure: Eenmanszaak (sole trader) is simplest for solo operations. BV recommended if you want liability protection or have higher revenue.
- 2 2. Register with the Chamber of Commerce (Kamer van Koophandel – KvK Curaçao) at Pietermaai. Bring passport, proof of address, and business plan outline. Fee: XCG 100–150.
- 3 3. Obtain a tax number (Cédula Fiscal) from the Belastingdienst Curaçao. This is required for issuing invoices and filing tax returns.
- 4 4. Determine OB (Omzetbelasting/sales tax) treatment. The general rate is 6%, with 7% and 9% categories for specific activities; one-person businesses around the XCG 30,000 small-business relief threshold need advice before invoicing.
- 5 5. Open a business bank account. MCB (Maduro & Curiel's Bank) and RBC Royal Bank are the main options. Expect KYC documentation requirements.
- 6 6. Ensure you have a valid work authorisation. Foreign nationals must have residence and work permission before starting self-employment; confirm the route with Immigratiedienst Curaçao and the Ministry of Economic Development.
- 7 7. Set up bookkeeping. Use local accountants familiar with Curaçao tax law, or Dutch-language accounting software (Exact Online, Twinfield). Monthly bookkeeping is strongly recommended.
- 8 8. File quarterly OB returns (if registered) by the 15th of the month following each quarter. Pay provisional income tax (voorlopige IB) quarterly.
Tax registration
Belastingdienst Curaçao – apply in person or via the online portal at belastingdienst.cw. Bring company registration (KvK extract), passport, and proof of address.
VAT threshold
XCG 30,000 annual turnover. Below this threshold, OB registration is optional.
Invoicing
Invoices must include: your company name and address, KvK registration number, Cédula Fiscal (tax number), client's name and address, invoice number, date, description of service, amount, applicable OB rate (often 6%, 7% or 9%) and amount if applicable, bank account details.
Social security
Self-employed persons are responsible for their own AOV/AWW contributions (old-age pension) and BVZ health insurance (AZV contributions). Contact SVB (Sociale Verzekeringsbank) to register as self-employed and set up contribution payments.
💡 Legacy E-Zone claims are a 2026 red flag: older materials still advertise a 2% regime, but that treatment has been abolished or grandfathered out for many structures. Get a written opinion from a Curaçao tax adviser before relying on any reduced-rate export or digital-business incentive.
