🧑💻 Freelancer / Self-Employed Guide
Steps to register:
- 1 Confirm immigration permission before accepting paid work: visitor/tourist status does not authorise local remunerated activity or services to Ecuadorian clients in Ecuador.
- 2 Obtain cédula (resident ID) or RUC registration at SRI — required before invoicing, opening a business bank account, or issuing SRI electronic invoices.
- 3 Choose tax regime with a contador: actividad empresarial/profesional (standard), RIMPE / simplified regime if eligible, or operating through an S.A./Cia. Ltda./S.A.S.
- 4 Set up SRI electronic-invoice (factura electrónica) software or online system — most Ecuadorian clients and public bodies will not pay without a compliant SRI electronic invoice.
- 5 Open an Ecuadorian business or personal bank account: bring RUC certificate, cédula/resident card, passport, proof of address, and a description of business activity.
- 6 Register for IVA if applicable: mandatory if taxable activity requires registration under the relevant SRI regime; monthly IVA declarations due by the 15th of the following month.
- 7 Clarify whether clients are Ecuadorian-source or foreign — services rendered entirely for foreign clients with no Ecuadorian nexus may be 0% ISR under the territorial system; get written confirmation from your contador.
- 8 Keep contracts, SRI electronic invoices, payment evidence, and deductible-expense documentation for 5 years (SRI audit window).
Tax registration
Register at SRI (sri.gob.ec) for RUC (unique tax/business number) and SRI en línea / RUC digital-signature access for filings. Choose tax regime. ISR annual declaration due March according to the ninth digit of the RUC/cédula. IVA monthly declarations due 15th of each following month. Quarterly advance ISR payments may apply if annual liability exceeds USD 1,000.
VAT threshold
IVA (15% standard rate in 2026) is mandatory registration if taxable activity requires it under the relevant SRI regime. Some professional services are IVA-exempt. RIMPE taxpayers have a simplified IVA treatment — confirm applicable threshold and regime with a contador before invoicing.
Invoicing
Ecuador requires SRI-authorised factura electrónica (electronic invoice) for most business activity. Invoice must include: full legal name/company name, RUC, IVA registration number (if applicable), client RUC, itemised description, IVA amount, and SRI QR code. Free SRI portal is available for low-volume invoicing; commercial software (Alegra, ContaFact, FacturaDirecta) is used by most active businesses. Clients typically will not pay without a compliant SRI electronic invoice. Retain records for 5 years.
Social security
Self-employed freelancers are not automatically enrolled in the IESS (Instituto Ecuatoriano de Seguridad Social) system. Voluntary IESS enrolment is available but has specific requirements and costs. Most independent workers rely on private health insurance. If you hire local employees, IESS registration and employer contributions (approximately 13.5% of covered salary) are mandatory.
💡 Ecuador uses USD in 2026 — no currency-exchange risk. The territorial tax system means foreign-source income (clients outside Ecuador, offshore) is generally not subject to Ecuadorian ISR — but the "source" analysis is fact-specific and requires professional advice. Do not mix personal and business bank accounts. File monthly obligations on time — late filings carry SRI penalties, interest, and compliance blocks. Check RIMPE eligibility carefully before relying on it — income type and activity restrictions can make you retroactively ineligible.
