Check altitude, heat, storms, air quality and security before hiking or cycling alone.
Public pools exist through municipal sports centres, universities and clubs, but access rules vary. Private clubs and gyms are more predictable for expats. Coastal swimming can be dangerous where rip currents, crocodile warnings, jellyfish or rainy-season swell are present, so follow local beach flags rather than tourist habit.

Volunteering is a practical route into Ecuadorian community life, but foreign residents must be careful about visa conditions, insurance and role boundaries.
