Ecuador (EC)
Ecuador is one of the most popular expat countries in the Americas in 2026, especially for retirees, remote-income households, investors, teachers, entrepreneurs and families who want US-dollar living, affordable private healthcare, varied climates and established foreign-resident communities.
Qualification Recognition
Getting your foreign credentials recognised in Ecuador.
Ecuador distinguishes ordinary employer assessment from formal regulated-profession recognition. Many expats only need apostilled degrees, transcripts, and reference letters for employers or immigration. Regulated roles — medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, psychology in clinical settings, architecture, engineering sign-off, law, public accounting, teaching in formal schools, and veterinary medicine — require Ecuadorian licensing, professional college registration, or SENESCYT degree recognition. SENESCYT (Secretaría de Educación Superior, Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación — senescyt.gob.ec) is the central authority for foreign degree recognition and registration; applications are submitted through the SIAU portal at siau.senescyt.gob.ec. Start before arrival: apostilles, certified translations, and university verifications are the slowest steps.
Regulated Professions
Process: Step 1 — Register your foreign degree with SENESCYT via the SIAU portal (siau.senescyt.gob.ec): create an account, upload documents, pay the $25 USD government fee, and schedule an in-person appointment at a SENESCYT office to present originals. SENESCYT has 30 business days to process from the in-person date (extendable by 15 days). Step 2 — For regulated professions: once SENESCYT registration is complete, apply to the relevant professional college (colegio) or ministry for a practice licence. Some professions (medicine, law) require additional exams, internship periods, or professional college membership. Step 3 — Work permission (visa/residency) is separate from professional recognition — coordinate both.
Authority: SENESCYT (senescyt.gob.ec / siau.senescyt.gob.ec) for degree registration. MSP (Ministerio de Salud Pública) for health profession licences. MinEduc (Ministerio de Educación) for teaching. Provincial professional colleges (colegios) for engineering, architecture, law, accounting. ARCSA for pharmacy and health product regulation.
Timeline: SENESCYT degree registration: officially 30 business days from in-person appointment; realistic total 6–10 weeks once documents are complete. Regulated profession licence after SENESCYT: 1–4 additional months depending on profession and colegio. Medical profession (full licence including any internship): 6–18 months. Teaching credential approval (MinEduc): 2–6 months.
Cost: SENESCYT government fee: USD 25. Apostille in home country: USD 50–200 depending on country. Certified Spanish translation by perito traductor: USD 50–150 per document (total USD 100–300 for typical package). Courier and notary: USD 50–150. Professional college membership fees vary: typically USD 100–500. Total process: USD 300–900 for standard cases; more for professions requiring additional exams or legal support.
Academic Degrees
Authority: SENESCYT — Secretaría de Educación Superior, Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación (senescyt.gob.ec). Applications submitted through the SIAU portal: siau.senescyt.gob.ec. SENESCYT is the government authority responsible for registering and recognising foreign academic credentials at technical, bachelor's, and postgraduate levels.
Process: Apply online at siau.senescyt.gob.ec. Required documents: original apostilled degree certificate, official transcripts, a grading/credit-scale explanation, course syllabus summary (for postgraduate and some technical degrees), certified Spanish translation of all documents, and passport identity pages. SENESCYT evaluates whether the foreign degree corresponds to an Ecuadorian academic level. Degrees earned entirely online in certain fields (arts, biological sciences, physical sciences, engineering, architecture, agriculture) are denied recognition under Resolution RPC-SE-07-No.019-2023. When a foreign degree cannot be registered, revalidation through a national university (homologación) is an alternative.
Equivalency service: SENESCYT's recognition service (siau.senescyt.gob.ec/reconocimiento-general-de-titulos-del-extranjero) is the primary route. The SIAU portal at siau.senescyt.gob.ec also handles health-sector titles separately (siau.senescyt.gob.ec/reconocimiento-de-titulos-profesionales-o-grados-academicos-en-el-campo-de-la-salud). UNHCR Ecuador (help.unhcr.org/ecuador) provides guidance for refugees seeking degree recognition.
Document Rules
Apostille: Ecuador is a Hague Apostille Convention member. Public documents from other Apostille member countries must bear an apostille before submission to SENESCYT or government bodies. The apostille is obtained from the competent authority in the country where the document was issued. Degrees, transcripts, police certificates, and civil registry documents all typically require apostille.
Legalisation: Documents from non-Hague countries require consular legalisation: authentication by the issuing country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then legalisation by the Ecuadorian embassy/consulate in that country. Gather all apostilles and legalisations before leaving your home country — they are significantly easier and cheaper to obtain there.
Sworn translation: Spanish translations for SENESCYT, civil registry, courts, and professional licensing must be performed by a perito traductor (certified expert translator) or a translator accepted by the relevant authority. Ordinary commercial translations are rejected. Perito translators are registered with provincial courts; lists are available from local court secretariats and notary offices. Cost: approximately USD 30–60 per page; budget USD 100–300 for a standard academic document package.

Typical Timelines
Simple employer credential review: 1–4 weeks once documents are complete. SENESCYT degree registration: 6–10 weeks from in-person appointment (30 business days official timeline). Regulated-profession licensing after SENESCYT: 1–4 months. Medical profession (full licence including internship): 6–18 months. Apostille, certified translation, and name-mismatch corrections usually drive the most significant delays.
Name order is a common issue: Ecuador uses paternal and maternal surnames, while many foreign systems do not. Keep all documents showing maiden names, middle names, and name changes, and use the exact same spelling across passport, resident card (cédula de identidad), RUC (tax ID), degree, and employment contracts. Online-only degrees in engineering, architecture, biological sciences, physical sciences, arts, and agriculture are rejected by SENESCYT under current regulations — graduates from fully online programmes in these fields should seek legal advice before applying. The professional visa (visa de trabajo) for regulated professions requires prior SENESCYT registration, so degree recognition is effectively a prerequisite for that visa category.
