Permanent Residency
Name
Permanent Residence (Residencia Permanente)
Eligibility
Available in 2026 through: Rentista/Jubilado (lifetime pension USD 1,000+/month), Investor (USD 300,000+ in real estate or securities), temporary residence (post-2021 reform: employment, professional or property tie required), family unity (spouse/child of Ecuadorian or permanent resident), Ecuadorian-born-child parent link, recognised refugee/asylum, long-term legal residence conversion and specific employment categories. Rentista/Jubilado and Investor routes grant permanent residence directly. temporary residence now grants temporary first, then permanent after requirements are met.
Duration
Indefinite carnet (resident card) โ no annual renewal. However: address changes, civil status changes, nationality changes, passport renewals and lost cards must still be reported to MREMH.
Requirements
- โValid passport (minimum 1 year validity beyond application)
- โPolice record (apostilled, from home country and any country of prior residence โ typically not older than 3 months)
- โHealth certificate from a Ecuadorian doctor or MINSA-recognised clinic (not older than 3 months)
- โApostilled/legalised civil documents (birth certificate, marriage certificate if applicable)
- โQualifying route evidence (pension letter, investment deed, employment contract, etc.)
- โLicensed Ecuadorian attorney power of attorney
- โGovernment application fees (vary by route; typically USD 250-800 in official fees)
- โPhotos to MREMH specifications
- โPrior resident cards and old passports if previously in the system
Permanent residence is not citizenship. It removes annual renewal obligations but does not remove RUC/tax filing, address-update, civil-status-update or passport-update obligations. Permanent residents who earn Ecuadorian-source income remain liable for ISR and IVA. For 2026 planning: retirees should keep original pension letters and annual proof-of-life confirmations even after permanent-card issuance โ banks, insurers, foreign pension funds and notaries all ask for them periodically. Rentista/Jubilado-route residents enjoy statutory discounts (50% off hotels, 25% airlines, 20% restaurants, 15% hospitals) requiring the Rentista/Jubilado booklet and carnet at point of purchase.

Citizenship
Name
Ecuadorian citizenship by naturalisation (Naturalizacion)
Eligibility
Standard route: 3 years of continuous legal residence with good conduct, Spanish ability and knowledge of Ecuadorian history and civic matters. Absences must not exceed 180 days in any calendar year during the 3-year qualifying period. Shorter routes: spouses or registered partners (uniรณn de hecho) of Ecuadorian citizens โ 2 years from the date of marriage or union registration (civics exam waived for this route); parents of Ecuadorian-citizen children โ variable/flexible; Latin American / Spanish nationals โ 2 years of residence. Persons who have rendered extraordinary service to Ecuador may be granted citizenship without residence. Absences during the qualifying period can reset or extend the clock โ get legal advice before any trip exceeding 90 days during the qualifying window.
Duration
After eligibility: the naturalisation file and process typically takes 12-36 months depending on Ministry of Government (MINGOB) queue, document completeness, name/spelling corrections and Tribunal Electoral registration for the cedula.
Requirements
- โContinuous legal resident card covering the qualifying period (all card renewals in sequence)
- โAll passports used during the qualifying period (entry/exit stamps as evidence of time in Ecuador)
- โBirth certificate โ apostilled/legalised and certified Spanish translation (not older than 1 year)
- โPolice record from home country and any third country where you lived for 2+ years โ apostilled
- โProof of residence in Ecuador (utility bills, lease contracts, school records, bank statements)
- โSpanish-language test and Ecuadorian history/culture test (20 multiple-choice questions, 90% pass mark required, administered by MINGOB); the civics exam is WAIVED for the spousal/uniรณn de hecho route โ an in-person interview is conducted instead
- โMarriage certificate and proof of Ecuadorian spouse/child where using a family route
- โRUC/tax record consistency (your name spelling on SRI must match passport and cedula)
- โNaturalisation application file fees (official fees USD 100-500; legal representation USD 2,000-8,000+)
Key 2026 friction points: (1) Apostille chain โ apostilles must come from the country where the document was issued, not where you currently live; some countries require additional legalisation if not in the Hague Convention. (2) Name spelling โ your name on the Ecuadorian naturalisation file must exactly match your home-country documents; even accent marks can cause rejection. (3) Travel during qualifying period โ keep a detailed spreadsheet of every entry/exit date from day one of residence. (4) Physical presence โ Ecuador typically requires actual physical presence during most of the qualifying period; extended absences (90+ days at a stretch, or cumulative absences over 25-30% of the period) can disqualify or reset the clock. (5) Dual nationality โ Ecuador allows dual nationality; your home country may not โ check both sides before submitting.
Other Routes to Residency & Citizenship
Citizenship by birth
Eligibility
Children born in Ecuador generally acquire Ecuadorian nationality.
Duration / Outcome
At birth/registration
Requirements
- โEcuadorian birth certificate
- โParents documents
- โHospital birth record
- โInterpreter or translated parent documents if required locally
Parents should also handle foreign consular birth registration where applicable. Check name order before signing the civil registry record because later corrections can be slow and travel-disruptive.
Citizenship by descent
Eligibility
Children of Ecuadorian citizens born abroad may be registered as Ecuadorian.
Duration / Outcome
By registration
Requirements
- โEcuadorian parent documents
- โForeign birth certificate
- โApostille/legalisation and translation where required
- โParent marriage/name-change documents if relevant
Name order and accent/spelling consistency matter. Families should compare Ecuadorian, foreign and airline passport naming before booking travel.
Naturalisation through Ecuadorian spouse or child (2-year route)
Eligibility
Foreign nationals married to or in registered uniรณn de hecho with an Ecuadorian citizen may apply after 2 years from the marriage/union registration date (not from when permanent residency was obtained). Parents of Ecuadorian-born children may have a flexible route โ consult MINGOB.
Duration / Outcome
2yr from marriage/union date, then ~90-day administrative processing
Requirements
- โMarriage certificate or registered uniรณn de hecho certificate
- โProof of Ecuadorian nationality of spouse
- โResident card (permanent residence is granted immediately for spouses of Ecuadorians)
- โProof of cohabitation and genuine relationship
- โGood conduct โ clean police records (Ecuador and home country)
- โNOTE: standard civics exam (20Q) is waived; an in-person interview is conducted instead
The 2-year clock runs from the marriage/union date, not from permit approval. Actual physical presence in Ecuador during those 2 years is required under the Ley de Movilidad Humana. Sham-marriage investigations apply.
Latin American or Spanish nationality route
Eligibility
Nationals of some Latin American countries and Spain may qualify with shorter residence periods under Ecuadorian rules.
Duration / Outcome
After required residence and naturalisation process
Requirements
- โPassport/nationality evidence
- โResident card
- โBirth certificate
- โNaturalisation file
Check current interpretation before relying on a shorter timeline; dual nationality rules in the origin country still matter.
๐ Dual Citizenship
โ
Dual citizenship is allowed โ Ecuador nationality rules are sensitive. Ecuadorian nationals in Ecuador are generally treated as Ecuadorian by Ecuadorian authorities, while naturalising foreigners should check both Ecuadorian procedure and home-country law before assuming dual nationality will be frictionless.
