Ecuador (EC)
Ecuador is one of the most popular expat countries in the Americas in 2026, especially for retirees, remote-income households, investors, teachers, entrepreneurs and families who want US-dollar living, affordable private healthcare, varied climates and established foreign-resident communities.
Key Documents Checklist
Gather these before and after moving to Ecuador.
Valid passport with sufficient validity and consistent name spelling across visa, entry stamp/migration record, resident card, bank and tax records. In 2026, minimum 6 months validity is recommended beyond planned stay. Renew early — Ecuadorian records (SRI, MREMH, banks) must be updated after passport renewal.
Visitor or residency-entry migration record generated by Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores y Movilidad Humana on arrival, increasingly digital for air arrivals. Verify the admitted-until date before leaving the airport. Land entries still require careful handling of the physical migration record. Keep a photo copy immediately.
Consular visa issued by a Ecuadorian embassy/consulate abroad, used to enter Ecuador for the residency-card issuance appointment. Valid for a limited period after issue. Must be exchanged for a resident card at MREMH within the specified window (typically 30 days of entry).
Tarjeta de Residente Temporal or Permanente issued by Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores y Movilidad Humana after the residency-card issuance or renewal appointment. Required for banking, cedula/RUC, driving licence, many contracts and landlord verification. Keep the card secure and renew before expiry (temporary cards only).
National identity card / cedula number used for many Ecuadorian systems including healthcare, banking, schools and government services. Foreign residents with a valid resident card can obtain one. Linked to your MREMH records and passport data.
Registro Unico de Contribuyentes (RUC) tax ID from SRI, required for invoicing, employment, property transactions and banking compliance. SRI en linea / RUC is the digital signature/access for filings and electronic invoices. Needed before issuing any factura electronica. Obtain at SRI with resident card, cedula, proof of address and business activity description.
Recent utility bill, bank statement, internet or lease document showing your Ecuadorian address. Required for bank account opening, SRI registration, driving licence, school enrollment and many government appointments. Must typically be issued within 30-90 days of the appointment.
Written lease agreement including landlord identity with ID verification, deposit amount and return conditions, lease term, utilities responsibility, maintenance obligations, pet permission and the property address matching your domicilio requirement. Review before signing and paying any deposit.
Birth, marriage, divorce, custody, adoption and name-change documents from your home country often require apostille under the Hague Convention (or full legalisation if the country is not a signatory) and certified Spanish translation for use in Ecuadorian immigration, notary, school and property proceedings.
Employer letters confirming position, salary and start date; payslips (SRI-certified nomina electronica); IESS registration certificate; ISR withholding certificates. Required for work permits, bank account KYC, some rental applications and residency renewals.
Financial solvency evidence required for residency applications (Rentista/Jubilado, Investor, temporary residence), rental applications, private school enrollment, property purchases and periodic bank KYC reviews. Foreign bank statements may need apostille/bank stamp and translation.
ANT-issued Ecuadorian driving licence; process is handled under ANT rules and local driving-school/agency practice. Foreign residents typically exchange their home-country licence for an Ecuadorian one after becoming resident. Required for driving, vehicle insurance claims and vehicle purchase/registration.
Current health insurance policy certificate with direct-billing contacts, pre-authorisation numbers, insurer emergency line, prescriptions, vaccination records and chronic-condition summaries. Keep these accessible for private hospital admissions, travel and annual insurance renewals.
Vaccination certificates (especially rabies), veterinary health certificate (issued within days of travel), Agrocalidad entry documents where applicable and airline pet approval confirmation. Requirements depend on origin country, species and airline. Begin preparation at least 4-6 weeks before travel.
📜 What is an Apostille?
An apostille is an official certification that validates a document for international use. It is issued by a designated authority in the country where the document was issued (usually a court or government office). Required for documents from Hague Convention member states.
🌍 Certified Translations
Certified translations must be done by a sworn/authorised translator. In Ecuador, only translations by officially registered translators are accepted by government offices. Keep originals — they may be returned after verification.
