Most expats use employers, recruiters, chambers, school networks and LinkedIn first. SocioEmpleo is useful for labour-market information and local roles, but foreigners still need the correct immigration status and work permission before accepting paid work.

💼 Work Permits

EU Citizens

EU citizens do not have automatic work rights in Ecuador. They need a visa or resident status that authorises work, or employer-sponsored permission to perform paid local activity.

Non-EU Citizens

All foreign nationals need the correct immigration status for paid work in Ecuador. Visitor status without permission to perform remunerated activities does not authorise local employment or freelancing for Ecuadorian clients.

EU Blue Card

Ecuador has no EU Blue Card equivalent. Skilled workers typically use employer-sponsored temporary residence, intra-company assignment or investor/business structures.

Freelancer Visa

Ecuador does not have a simple digital-nomad work permit. Remote work for foreign clients, services to Ecuadorian clients, local business activity and tax residence should each be reviewed separately with an immigration lawyer and contador.

⏱️ Work Culture

Typical hours The maximum workweek has historically been 48 hours with reform discussions ongoing. Office roles typically run Monday–Friday; manufacturing, retail and hospitality often include Saturdays.

Annual leave Paid vacation starts at 15 working days after the first year and increases with tenure under the Código del Trabajo.

Sick leave IESS medical certificates matter for payroll-protected illness. Private doctor notes explain absence but may not trigger IESS-linked sick pay.

Trial period Trial periods are contract-limited under Ecuadorian law and do not remove minimum rights. Many employers use probation to assess fit while still managing payroll, IESS and statutory benefits.

Notice period Notice and settlement depend on contract and termination reason. Final pay, décimo tercero, décimo cuarto, vacation, vacation pay and severance calculations are technical and vary significantly.

Salary range Software engineers USD 25,000–70,000/year in major hubs; bilingual operations USD 15,000–35,000/year; international school roles USD 18,000–45,000/year; senior management and manufacturing roles can exceed USD 60,000/year. Salaries are quoted gross in USD.

Pay frequency Usually monthly bank transfer with SRI-certified nómina electrónica payroll receipts. Some employers pay biweekly.
