Banking in France
Recommended banks, payment culture and credit score basics.
France is a well-banked country with high use of carte bancaire (CB) and growing contactless/mobile payments. Opening a compte courant (current account) usually requires a passport/CNI, justificatif de domicile, and RIB details. All payroll, tax refunds, CAF allowances and reimbursements flow via SEPA direct deposit into your French IBAN. Cheques (chèques) are still widely used for rent, school fees and medical co-pays.

Payment culture
Carte bancaire (CB) contactless up to €50/transaction is ubiquitous — even at markets, food trucks, and bakeries. Most cards are "CB Visa" or "CB Mastercard" (co-branded). Cheques still used for rent, school fees, caution, and some medical co-pays. Chèques must be deposited in person or by post to your bank. Apple Pay and Google Pay supported at most merchants. Virements SEPA instantanés (instant credit transfer) free and same-second in many banks since 2024.
Cash access
DABs (distributeurs automatiques de billets) at bank branches are free for your bank's clients and SEPA cards. Inter-bank withdrawals are free for most French cards (each bank grants a quota). Supermarkets (Monoprix, Casino, Franprix) offer "cashback" at checkout with CB — up to €60 with a purchase. Daily cap typically €300–1,000 depending on card tier.
Banque de France — FICP & FCC
France does not have a private credit score like SCHUFA. The Banque de France maintains two registers: FICP (Fichier des Incidents de Remboursement des Crédits aux Particuliers — loan defaults) and FCC (Fichier Central des Chèques — bounced cheques and withdrawn credit cards). You can request a free extract at any Banque de France branch with ID, or online via particuliers.banque-france.fr.
Free annual check: Unlimited free extracts at particuliers.banque-france.fr using FranceConnect+
Being FICP/FCC "fiché" blocks you from obtaining new credit for 5–7 years. Banks also consider internal scoring and TEG/TAEG ratios (debt ratio max ~35% of net income since HCSF 2022 rules). To build a positive record: pay all bills by prélèvement, avoid découvert (overdraft) penalties, and keep your compte in credit.
International transfers
Wise is the cheapest for non-EUR transfers (near-interbank FX). Revolut Premium includes free international transfers. Traditional banks charge €15–40 + 1–3% spread for SWIFT — very expensive. SEPA transfers within EU/EEA: free and same-day (virement SEPA) or instant (virement SEPA instantané). Since 2024, instant SEPA must be offered at the same price as a standard virement (EU regulation).
