Payment Culture
France is largely cashless. Carte Bancaire (CB) and contactless payments are accepted nearly everywhere, even at boulangeries and markets. Minimum card amounts (often €5–10) still exist at small shops. Cheques (chèques) are still used for rent, school fees and some services — a rarity in Europe.
ATM Tips
Use bank ATMs (distributeurs automatiques / DAB) at BNP Paribas, Société Générale, Crédit Agricole, LCL to avoid fees. Many French ATMs no longer charge foreign cards since SEPA harmonisation, but your home bank may still charge. Daily withdrawal limits typically €300–500.
