France (FR)
France is a unitary semi-presidential republic and the EU's most visited country, renowned for its world-class cuisine and wine, the iconic City of Light that is Paris, the French Riviera, iconic Alpine ski resorts, and a generous social state offering universal healthcare, extensive family benefits, and strong worker protections.
⚠️ Costly Mistakes to Avoid
The most expensive and common mistakes expats make in France — and exactly how to avoid them.
Missing the 3-month VLS-TS validation deadline
Non-EU arrivals on a VLS-TS (visa long séjour valant titre de séjour) must validate their visa online at administration-etrangers-en-france.interieur.gouv.fr (ANEF) within 3 months of arrival and pay the OFII stamp tax. Failure to validate leaves you in an irregular situation.
⚡ Visa becomes invalid. Cannot renew as carte de séjour. Risk of deportation and re-entry ban.
📅 Deadline: Within 3 months of arrival in France
✅ Go to administration-etrangers-en-france.interieur.gouv.fr immediately on arrival. Pay the €200 tax via stamp fiscal (achat en ligne). Keep the attestation OFII as proof for all future administrative procedures.
Skipping the Contrat d'Intégration Républicaine (CIR)
Non-EU adults arriving with a first titre de séjour of 1+ year must sign the CIR with OFII within the first months after arrival. Attending the civic training and language course is mandatory — absences can block the renewal of your titre de séjour and future naturalisation.
⚡ Carte de séjour pluriannuelle refused at renewal. Naturalisation application rejected.
📅 Deadline: Convocation from OFII usually within 3 months of VLS-TS validation
✅ Attend every CIR session (civic formation, language course, orientation professionnelle). Request an attestation de fin de formation and keep it with your dossier.
Renewing the titre de séjour too late
Your carte de séjour must be renewed 2 to 4 months before expiry via the ANEF portal (administration-etrangers-en-france.interieur.gouv.fr). Late renewal leaves you without valid residence papers, blocks travel outside France, and can trigger a penalty.
⚡ €180 fine. Gap in residence rights. Cannot re-enter France if travelling. Employer may suspend the contract.
📅 Deadline: 2 to 4 months before expiry of current titre de séjour
✅ Set a calendar reminder 6 months before expiry. Submit the online renewal via ANEF with all justificatifs (domicile, ressources, assurance maladie). The récépissé de demande gives interim legal status.
Driving with a non-EU licence after the 1-year deadline
Holders of a non-EU driving licence have exactly 1 year from establishing residence in France (as shown on carte de séjour or justificatif de domicile) to exchange their licence at ANTS. After 12 months the foreign licence is no longer valid and you must pass the French code + conduite to drive again.
⚡ Driving illegally (article L221-2 Code de la route). Fine €15,000 + possible imprisonment. Insurance invalid after accident. Must retake full permis.
📅 Deadline: 1 year from date of establishing residence
✅ Check whether your country has a reciprocity agreement on interieur.gouv.fr. Submit the demande d'échange on permisdeconduire.ants.gouv.fr within the first 3 months. Processing can take 6+ months.
Driving with a foreign-plated car after 1 month
Importing your vehicle: you must request the French carte grise within 1 month of establishing residence (arrêté du 9 février 2009). Passing the contrôle technique, obtaining the quitus fiscal from impôts, and paying the taxe régionale are mandatory steps.
⚡ Fine €135 per check. Potential immobilisation of vehicle. Insurance invalid.
📅 Deadline: 1 month from establishing residence
✅ Begin the démarche immediately on ants.gouv.fr (téléservice immatriculation). Collect: titre de séjour, justificatif de domicile, contrôle technique <6 months, quitus fiscal (for cars imported from EU), original carte grise.
Going without French health insurance (Assurance Maladie)
Healthcare coverage is mandatory in France. New arrivals must register with CPAM via ameli.fr or a paper dossier (formulaire S1106) as soon as they have been resident 3 months or begin employment. Without a numéro de sécurité sociale you pay medical costs 100% upfront.
⚡ Medical costs paid fully out of pocket. Emergency care can cost thousands. Cannot access carte Vitale, 100% Santé, or reimbursements.
✅ Employees: your employer declares you to URSSAF. Others: submit the PUMa dossier to CPAM with titre de séjour, justificatif de domicile, RIB, extrait d'acte de naissance traduit. Activate Mon Espace Santé after receiving the numéro provisoire.
Not having home insurance at the état des lieux
Loi du 6 juillet 1989 requires every tenant to present an attestation d'assurance habitation (risques locatifs) at the signing of the bail AND at every anniversary. The bailleur can terminate the lease if no proof is produced after mise en demeure.
⚡ Landlord can resile the bail (loi Alur). Personal liability for water damage, fire, broken windows up to tens of thousands of euros.
📅 Deadline: Before signing the bail and at every anniversary
✅ Subscribe an assurance habitation for €100–250/year (MAIF, MAAF, Macif, MAE, Luko) immediately on signing. Ask for the attestation within 24h and bring it to the état des lieux d'entrée.
Missing the annual déclaration de revenus
Every French tax resident must file a déclaration de revenus between April and early June of each year — even if all income was already subject to prélèvement à la source. First-time filers must use a paper form (Cerfa 2042) because they have no numéro fiscal yet. Non-filing triggers automatic assessment + penalties.
⚡ Majoration 10% + intérêts de retard (0.2%/month). Mise en demeure. Potential 40% penalty for mauvaise foi.
📅 Deadline: End of May (online) or mid-May (paper) — dates vary by département
✅ Create your espace particulier on impots.gouv.fr as soon as you receive your numéro fiscal. First year: download Cerfa 2042 + 2042-C + 2047 (foreign income) and submit by post. Keep payslips, bank certificates, and foreign tax statements.
Falling for door-to-door energy contract scams
Since loi du 9 avril 2024, door-to-door (porte-à-porte) sales of energy contracts are banned in France. Any vendor arriving uninvited and asking for your RIB, contrat EDF, or Linky ID is fraudulent. Genuine energy providers do not recruit this way.
⚡ Contract switched without consent. Unrecoverable fees. Identity theft if RIB shared.
✅ Refuse all unsolicited visits about energy. If you want to switch, go to energie-info.fr (médiateur national de l'énergie) or comparateurs Selectra, Hellowatt. Report illicit démarchage to dgccrf.gouv.fr (SignalConso).
Fake rental listings on Leboncoin / SeLoger
Scammers post attractive rentals at below-market rent, claim to be "expats abroad", ask for a Western Union / Revolut / crypto deposit before viewing, then vanish. Paris, Lyon and Bordeaux are highly targeted. Also common: fake landlords copying real listings to intercept dossiers.
⚡ Loss of €1,000–5,000 deposit. Identity theft if piece d'identité sent.
✅ Never pay before viewing in person. Never send money via Western Union / crypto / PayPal Friends&Family. Verify landlord identity via taxe foncière or syndic. Prefer agences with carte professionnelle or VISALE-supported listings.
Leaving without a detailed état des lieux de sortie
At move-out, the état des lieux de sortie must be signed by both parties. Without it or if rushed, the bailleur can invoke dégradations imaginaires and keep the depôt de garantie (1 month unfurnished / 2 months meublé). Dispute resolution at Commission Départementale de Conciliation (CDC) takes 4–8 months.
⚡ Loss of depôt de garantie (€1,500–5,000). Long dispute via CDC or tribunal de proximité.
✅ Never accept a rushed état des lieux. Take photos of every room with date embedded. Compare with état des lieux d'entrée point-by-point. Challenge any dégradation not listed d'entrée. Refuse to sign if pressured — request a huissier (~€300).
Not registering a dog on I-CAD
Since 6 January 1999, all dogs over 4 months must be identifiés (microchip or tatouage) and registered on the Fichier National I-CAD. Non-registered dogs found by fourrière are often euthanised after 8 days. Owner faces contravention and refusal to register forbidden cat/dog breeds (chiens catégorie 1 or 2) adds €15,000 fine and confiscation.
⚡ Contravention €750. Dog placed in fourrière and possibly euthanised. Catégorie 1/2 dogs: €15,000 fine + confiscation.
📅 Deadline: Within 4 months of dog's age, or within 8 days of adoption/arrival
✅ Book a vétérinaire for microchip identification (€60–80) and register at i-cad.fr. Catégorie 1/2 dogs require a permis de détention from the mairie (formation, assurance, antécédents).
France Travail enrolment beyond 12 months after job loss
To claim ARE (allocation de retour à l'emploi), you must register as demandeur d'emploi with France Travail within 12 months of job loss AND have worked 6 months in the last 24 months (revised 2024). Late registration causes entitlement to drop month by month; after 3 years of non-activity, rights reset.
⚡ Loss of entitlement to ARE (~€1,100–€5,000/month for 18–27 months). Cannot reclaim.
📅 Deadline: Within 12 months of end of contract
✅ Register immediately at francetravail.fr — even before the last day of contract. Attend the entretien professionnel. Submit attestation employeur France Travail within 5 days of rupture.
Missing the prud'hommes deadline after dismissal
A dismissed employee has 12 months (from notification of licenciement) to bring a claim at the Conseil de Prud'hommes (1 year for licenciement pour motif personnel, reduced from 2 years in 2017). Nullité de licenciement (discrimination, harcèlement) retains a 5-year limit. Missing the 12-month window blocks any indemnité supérieure to the minimum légal.
⚡ Cannot contest dismissal or claim indemnité abusive. Only minimum severance retained.
📅 Deadline: 12 months from licenciement notification
✅ Consult an avocat du travail or the défenseur syndical the day you receive the lettre de licenciement. Most licenciements négocient une transaction (~1–3 months salary per year of service).
Ignoring a mise en demeure or commandement de payer
A lettre recommandée with "mise en demeure" or a huissier's "commandement de payer" starts legal deadlines. Ignoring them triggers injonctions de payer, saisies bancaires, or procédure d'expulsion. Opening and responding within 15–30 days is essential.
⚡ Saisie attribution on bank account. Saisie sur salaire. For rent: expulsion procedure via juge contentieux de la protection.
📅 Deadline: 15–30 days from receipt of mise en demeure / commandement
✅ Open every lettre recommandée immediately. Respond in writing with LRAR or email with AR. If disputing: consult ADIL (logement) or Point-Justice (generalist legal aid).
Driving in a ZFE-m without a valid Crit'Air sticker
Zones à Faibles Émissions mobilité (ZFE-m) in Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Montpellier and 39 other agglomérations ban diesel cars pre-2011 (Crit'Air 4/5/non-classés). Paris bans Crit'Air 3 from 2026. Driving without the vignette or with a banned category triggers automatic fines via plate-recognition cameras.
⚡ Fine €68 (light vehicle) or €135 (heavy). Potential immobilisation. Insurance may contest claims.
✅ Order the Crit'Air vignette at certificat-air.gouv.fr (€3.77). Check the category of your vehicle before travelling to a ZFE. The Mappy and Waze apps display ZFE boundaries.
Renting a DPE F or G "passoire thermique"
Since 1 January 2025 all G-rated homes are banned from being put up for rent (loi Climat & Résilience). F-rated homes follow on 1 January 2028, E-rated on 1 January 2034. Tenants in banned-category flats can ask the juge to compel renovations, reduce rent, or terminate.
⚡ Landlord cannot increase rent. Tenant can sue for travaux or rent reduction. Landlord cannot renew a new bail.
✅ Always request the DPE (diagnostic de performance énergétique) before signing a bail. Refuse G-rated for post-2025 leases. Ask the landlord about planned works and MaPrimeRénov' eligibility.
Misunderstanding the trêve hivernale
The trêve hivernale (1 November to 31 March) suspends expulsions, electricity/gas cut-offs, and water disconnections for unpaid bills. BUT it does not cancel the debt — arrears accumulate and utilities can be cut on 1 April. Many tenants mistake the trêve for a rent holiday and fall into severe debt.
⚡ Massive utility bill + late fees on 1 April. Potential expulsion after April. Credit file impaired.
✅ Never stop paying rent or utilities. If in difficulty: contact the Fonds de Solidarité pour le Logement (FSL) via CCAS, request a delai de paiement from the énergéticien, or see an assistante sociale. Loi Lemoine also offers insurance in case of impayés.
Not sorting biodéchets (compulsory since January 2024)
Loi AGEC requires every household, restaurant, and business to sort biodéchets (food waste, garden clippings) separately since 1 January 2024. Municipalities provide bio-seaux, bac brun, or composteurs de quartier. Non-compliance can be penalised like any waste violation.
⚡ Potential fine (up to €35 forfaitaire for public-space violations). Residence association or syndic may impose penalties for misuse of communal bins.
✅ Contact your mairie or syndic for the local device (bac brun, composteur collectif, point de dépôt). Use a bio-seau with kraft bags. Avoid plastic: only végétal compostable is allowed.
Not updating your prélèvement à la source rate
PAS default rate is calculated from the previous year's declaration. If your income drops (unemployment, parental leave, move abroad) you must adjust the rate on impots.gouv.fr or continue paying too much tax for 18+ months. Married couples: individualised rates are default since September 2025 — couples with big income gaps should check whether joint rate is better.
⚡ Too much tax deducted monthly. Large refund 18 months later but no interest. Cash-flow impact.
✅ Log into impots.gouv.fr > Gérer mon prélèvement à la source > Actualiser ma situation. Simulate on the impots.gouv.fr calculator. Couples: toggle taux individualisé vs. commun.
Applying for naturalisation with B1 French after 1 January 2026
Loi du 26 janvier 2024 (loi Darmanin) raised the French level required for naturalisation from B1 to B2 for applications filed from 1 January 2026. DELF B1 certificates remain valid but no longer suffice. TCF IRN with B2 score, DELF B2, or equivalent is required.
⚡ Naturalisation dossier rejected. Wait before re-applying. Lost €55 timbre fiscal.
📅 Deadline: From 1 January 2026 for all new applications
✅ Check your certificate level. If only B1: register for DELF B2 or TCF IRN (€100–180) at France Éducation International, Alliance Française, or certified centres. Budget 3–6 months preparation.
"Logement vide" really is empty
In France a "logement vide" contains no furniture, no kitchen cabinets, no wardrobes, often no light fixtures and sometimes no appliances. Tenants must plan for €2,000–6,000 of essentials on move-in. "Meublé" is fully furnished under décret du 31 juillet 2015 (liste de 11 éléments minimum).
⚡ Unexpected cost of €2,000–6,000 for furniture, kitchen, lighting.
✅ Read the annonce carefully. "Meublé" must include bed, fridge, four burners, oven/microwave, table, chairs, shelves, utensils, bedding, curtains, cleaning equipment. Ask for the inventaire before signing.
Tapage nocturne and neighbour complaints
Tapage nocturne (noise between 22:00 and 07:00) and tapage diurne (repeated/excessive noise in daytime) are infractions under article R623-2 Code pénal. Repeated complaints lead to procès-verbal, fines, and can justify a bail termination via the tribunal.
⚡ Fine €68 forfaitaire (up to €450). Written warning from bailleur (mise en demeure). Risk of résiliation of bail on repeated offences.
✅ Respect the règlement de copropriété. No loud noise 22:00–07:00. Warn neighbours before soirées. Carpeting or tapis reduces échos in old Haussmannien buildings.
Unpaid bills causing fichage FICP / FCC at Banque de France
A single unpaid credit, loan, or authorised overdraft can result in FICP (Fichier des Incidents de remboursement des Crédits aux Particuliers) fichage at Banque de France, visible for 5 years. FCC for chèques sans provision lasts 5 years. Both block access to credit, new bank accounts in some banks, and even mobile subscriptions.
⚡ No credit for 5 years. Difficulty changing banks. Potentially inability to open an account.
✅ Set alerts on your banking app. Pay crédits renouvelables in full. If you cannot: commission de surendettement at Banque de France can suspend fichage. Check your fichage free at banque-france.fr (Mes Démarches).
Not having assurance scolaire for school-age children
Assurance scolaire is mandatory for school trips (sorties facultatives) and activités périscolaires, and is requested by écoles/collèges at rentrée. Without it, the child may be excluded from sorties. Cheap options (€10–30/year) available via MAE, MAIF or your home assurance habitation.
⚡ Child excluded from outings, voyages scolaires. Personal liability for accidents.
📅 Deadline: Before rentrée scolaire (early September)
✅ Check if your assurance habitation already includes responsabilité civile + individuelle accidents (often does). If not, subscribe MAE €10–30/year. Give attestation to the school in September.
Not claiming CAF benefits after arrival
Non-EU and EU parents residing in France can claim allocations familiales, prime de naissance, CMG, APL and many other benefits. Many never apply — CAF will not contact you. Retroactive claims are limited to 24 months for most benefits.
⚡ Up to €5,000+ per year unclaimed. Can only reclaim 24 months back.
✅ Create a CAF account at caf.fr as soon as you arrive. Declare situation familiale, composition du foyer, ressources. Use the simulator "Mes droits sociaux" on mesdroitssociaux.gouv.fr.
Paying TVA as a micro-entrepreneur above threshold
Micro-entrepreneurs enjoy franchise en base de TVA below €37,500 (services) or €85,000 (vente). Crossing the threshold triggers mandatory TVA declaration from the 1st of the following month — backdated liability + penalties if ignored. Many freelancers miss this when their CA grows rapidly.
⚡ TVA non-collectée + majorations (10–40%). Retroactive adjustment on client invoices often uncollectable.
✅ Monitor your CA cumulé. Switch to régime réel simplifié on impots.gouv.fr before exceeding. Invoice TVA from the switch date. Consider expert-comptable above €30,000 CA.
Expecting a French pension contribution refund on leaving
Unlike Germany, France does NOT refund pension contributions to departing residents. Contributions are definitively acquired. You retain the right to a pro-rata French pension payable worldwide from legal retirement age — but you cannot cash out on departure. Many expats wrongly expect a refund like Germany's Beitragserstattung.
⚡ No lump-sum refund available. Must wait until retirement age (64+) to access the French pension, possibly in another currency abroad.
✅ Plan your international retirement via info-retraite.fr and CLEISS. Even 1 trimestre generates rights — file a demande de retraite at 64 from abroad. Combine with home-country pensions under bilateral convention.
A will not registered at FCDDV may never be found
A testament olographe kept at home or abroad may never surface after death — the notaire handling the succession queries only the Fichier Central des Dispositions de Dernières Volontés (FCDDV). Unregistered wills are regularly lost, destroyed, or contested. Registration costs ~€12 and is a simple notaire formality.
⚡ Will ignored in favour of dévolution légale. Heirs distributed under intestate rules.
✅ Deposit your testament at a notaire (€25–125) and ask for FCDDV registration (~€12). The notaire keeps the original; only the inscription is in the file, not the content. Update after marriage/PACS/divorce/birth.
Trying to disinherit children despite the réserve héréditaire
The French réserve héréditaire (articles 912–917 Code civil) reserves ½ of the estate for 1 child, 2/3 for 2, ¾ for 3+. Since loi du 24 août 2021, even foreign-law elections under EU 650/2012 cannot disinherit French-resident children — they may file an "action en prélèvement compensatoire" to recover their share on French assets.
⚡ Will partially annulled. Disinherited children reclaim réserve on French assets. Legal battles 2–5 years.
✅ Discuss avec un notaire specialised in droit international. Use donation-partage or assurance-vie (excluded from succession up to €152,500/beneficiary before 70) for flexibility. Explicitly elect national law only where children are not EU-resident.
Importing pets to France from outside the EU requires an RNATT titre test and a 3-month wait — begin at least 5 months before travel
EU Regulation 576/2013 governs all non-commercial pet movements into France (and the EU) from third countries. For dogs, cats, and ferrets arriving from non-EU countries including the USA, UK, Canada, and Australia, the full requirements are: (1) ISO 11784/11785 microchip implanted before or at the time of the first rabies vaccination; (2) Rabies vaccination with an approved inactivated vaccine (Nobivac Rabies, Rabisin, Purevax etc.) administered after microchipping; (3) RNATT (Rabies Neutralising Antibody Titre Test) blood test taken at an EU-approved laboratory showing ≥0.5 IU/ml — the blood sample cannot be taken until at least 30 days after the rabies vaccination; (4) A waiting period of 3 months calculated from the date of the RNATT blood draw (not from the test result, not from vaccination); (5) An official health certificate completed by an accredited veterinarian and endorsed by the national competent authority (USDA/APHIS for USA, CFIA for Canada, APHA for UK, DAFF for Australia) within 10 days of departure. The minimum total timeline from microchip to legal EU entry is approximately 4.5–5 months assuming vaccinations and tests proceed without delays.
⚡ Pets arriving without the complete documentation are refused entry at the French border (CDG, Orly, Marseille, Lyon airports, or Channel Tunnel terminal). The pet is returned at the owner's expense — flights and holding costs typically €1,500–5,000 — or placed in quarantine pending compliance. France does not have a quarantine facility equivalent to the UK's APHA-approved kennels for non-compliant pets; refusal and return is the standard outcome.
📅 Deadline: Begin the microchip → vaccination → RNATT → 3-month wait sequence at least 5 months before planned travel to France
✅ Contact your current vet and the national authority (USDA/APHIS, CFIA, APHA) at least 5 months before your planned move to France. Confirm your vet is accredited to issue the required health certificate in your country. Schedule: microchip (if not already done), rabies vaccination, RNATT blood draw 30+ days later, then wait 3 months from the blood draw date before travel. Use an EU-approved laboratory for the RNATT — the list is published on the European Commission website (food.ec.europa.eu). Book an accredited endorsing vet or USDA Accredited Veterinarian for the health certificate in the 10 days before departure.
Not considering Pacte Dutreil for business transmission
The Pacte Dutreil (article 787 B CGI) allows up to 75% exemption on droits de donation/succession for family business transmissions. Rarely used by expat business owners who assume the 45% top rate applies — the structured engagement collectif + individuel of 6 years can save tens of thousands of euros.
⚡ Unnecessary inheritance tax. Assets liquidated to pay droits.
✅ Consult a notaire specialised in droit patrimonial 5+ years before a transmission. Sign an engagement collectif de conservation with associés. Combine with donation-partage for maximal efficiency.
SMIC is €1,823.03 gross/month (€12.02/hour) from January 2026; raised to €1,867.02 (€12.31/hour) from June 2026
The SMIC (salaire minimum interprofessionnel de croissance) is €12.02 gross/hour, €1,823.03 gross/month (35h) from 1 January 2026 (+1.18% revalorisation). A further automatic increase to €12.31/hour, €1,867.02 gross/month applies from 1 June 2026 (+2.41%). Net from January: approximately €1,443/month. Every employed worker must earn at least SMIC — below is an infraction punishable by up to 5 years prison and €75,000 fine for employers.
⚡ None — informational.
✅ Check your bulletin de paie: taux horaire brut ≥ €12.02 (Jan–May 2026) or ≥ €12.31 (from Jun 2026). If below, report to Inspection du travail (dreets.gouv.fr) or SNT helpline (0806 000 126).
PASS is €48,060/year (€4,005/month) in 2026 — driving cotisations and pension
The PASS (Plafond Annuel de la Sécurité Sociale) is €48,060/year (€4,005/month) in 2026 (+2% from €47,100 in 2025). Many social contributions, pension points, and benefits are indexed on it. Crossing the PASS threshold means your cotisations retraite shift to tranche 2 (21.59% on AGIRC-ARRCO), with significant impact on net salary and pension rights.
⚡ None — informational.
✅ Understand your bulletin de paie: cotisations below and above PASS are different. Use URSSAF simulators for precise effects.

The RSA (Revenu de Solidarité Active) pays €651.69/month for a single adult from 1 April 2026 (+0.8% revalorisation). Supplement for couples, per child, and housing. Combined with prime d'activité for low-earners. Since 2025, conditionnalité on 15h/week of activity (formation, démarches France Travail) applies.
⚡ None — informational.
✅ Apply at caf.fr or mesdroitssociaux.gouv.fr. Requires 5 years of legal residence for non-EU (since 2019). EU citizens: right to RSA after 3 months residence + search for work.
Income tax brackets revalued +1.8% for 2026 revenue

⚡ None — informational.
✅ Simulate on impots.gouv.fr > Simulateur IR. If your PAS rate does not match reality, update it in Gérer mon prélèvement à la source. First-time filers: create your espace particulier once you receive your numéro fiscal (on first avis).
Legal retirement age is 63 years 3 months for 1965 cohort in 2026
Loi du 14 avril 2023 gradually raises the legal retirement age from 62 to 64 by September 2030. For those born in 1965, the legal age reached in 2026 is 63 years 3 months. Those born 1968+ will need to wait until 64. Full-rate age (without trimestres) remains at 67.
⚡ None — informational.
✅ Check your RIS (Relevé Individuel de Situation) at info-retraite.fr. Simulate your retirement age + amount with M@rel. Carrière longue workers can still leave at 58–62.
CPF training now has €100 reste-à-charge per formation
Since 2 May 2024, every formation financed by CPF (Mon Compte Formation) bears a €100 reste-à-charge payable by the beneficiary — except for demandeurs d'emploi and cases where the employer abondé the CPF. This change reduced CPF usage by ~50%. Abondements from the employer or France Travail can neutralise the reste-à-charge.
⚡ None — informational.
✅ Check if your employer abonde CPF (plan de développement des compétences). Demandeurs d'emploi exempt — register with France Travail first. Budget the €100 when planning a DELF or other formation.
No TV licence in France since 2022
The contribution à l'audiovisuel public (previously €138/year) was abolished in August 2022. No fee, no registration. Public broadcasting (France Télévisions, Radio France) is now fully funded by the state budget. Many arrivals still expect a TV fee like the UK or Germany — no such thing in France anymore.
⚡ None — informational.
✅ Nothing to do. Private broadcasters (TF1, M6, Canal+) are unrelated. Canal+ subscription is optional.
