Maternity, parental leave and child benefits in France.
France offers comprehensive family protection through Caisse d'Allocations Familiales (CAF) benefits, strict employer obligations, and universal free schooling from age 3. The "politique familiale" is historically generous — France has one of the highest fertility rates in Europe. Always declare family events to CAF within 1 month to activate benefits. Create your espace personnel at caf.fr or on the Caf – Mon Compte app.
Congé maternité
Before birth: Prénatal: 6 weeks before the due date for the 1st or 2nd child, 8 weeks for a 3rd+, 12 weeks for twins, 24 weeks for triplets+. Can be advanced up to 2 weeks to postnatal (with medical authorisation).
After birth: Postnatal: 10 weeks for 1st/2nd child (= 16 weeks total), 18 weeks for 3rd+ (= 26 total), 22 weeks for twins (= 34 total). MANDATORY minimum 8 weeks (2 prénatal + 6 postnatal). Paid at 100% of base salary capped at PMSS €4,005/month (2026) by Assurance Maladie — many employers under convention collective top up to full salary.
Job protection: Protection from dismissal from the day the pregnancy is declared and for 10 weeks after the end of congé maternité (article L1225-4). Can only be dismissed for serious fault unrelated to pregnancy, and notice must explicitly state the reason. Protection also applies during the 4 semaines de protection post-retour.
Congé parental d'éducation / PreParE
Max duration: Up to 3 years per child (until the child's 3rd birthday for a 1st child; until 3rd birthday for 2nd+ child if taken consecutively after maternity leave). Can be taken full-time or part-time (80%, 60%, 50%).
Split rules / Elterngeld: Paid via PreParE (Prestation Partagée d'Éducation de l'enfant) from CAF: €448/month full-time, €290/month 60–80%, €173/month 50% (2026). Duration: 1 child = 6 months per parent (12 months if shared); 2+ children = 24 months per parent (48 months if shared). Requires 8+ trimesters of old-age insurance contributions in the 2 years before the 1st child (4 years for 2nd child). Apply at caf.fr.
Benefits
Allocations familiales
€150–343/month for 2 children; €342–584 for 3; +€171–292 per extra child (means-tested, 2026)
Duration: From the 2nd dependent child until age 20
Eligibility: 2+ dependent children under 20. Amount depends on household income (3 brackets since 2015 means-test reform).
How to apply: Declared automatically on caf.fr when you declare your 2nd child — CAF calculates and pays monthly.
Also includes majoration forfaitaire of €78.35/month when the eldest child turns 14.
Prime à la naissance (PAJE)
€1,096.48 (birth) / €2,192.94 (adoption, 2026)
Duration: Lump sum paid in the 2nd month after birth/arrival
Eligibility: Means-tested. Ceiling ~€51,218/year for a couple with 1 child, higher with more children.
How to apply: Automatic if already registered with CAF after declaring the pregnancy in the 4th month.
Allocation de base PAJE
€187.24/month (full rate) / €93.62/month (reduced rate, 2026)
Duration: From birth until child's 3rd birthday
Eligibility: Means-tested household income
How to apply: Automatic once prime à la naissance is processed.
Complément de libre choix du Mode de Garde (CMG)
€179–934/month depending on income, type of care and child age (2026)
Duration: Until child's 6th birthday
Eligibility: Using a nounou agréée, crèche, or micro-crèche
How to apply: Register the childminder on Pajemploi.urssaf.fr — CAF auto-pays.
Allocation de rentrée scolaire (ARS)
€423–462/child, depending on age bracket (6–18 years, 2026)
Duration: Annual lump sum in late August
Eligibility: Means-tested. Ceiling ~€27,000/year for 1 child, +€6,225 per additional
How to apply: Automatic for CAF-registered families.
Aide personnalisée au logement (APL)
€100–400+/month depending on rent, zone, and income
Duration: While eligible
Eligibility: Tenants/homeowners with housing costs above a means-tested threshold
How to apply: Simulate and apply on caf.fr. Very popular among students and low-income workers.
Since 2021, calculated on rolling 12-month income (previously year N-2).
RSA (Revenu de Solidarité Active)
€635.71/month single (2026); higher for families
Duration: While eligible, reviewed quarterly
Eligibility: Residents 25+ (18+ for young parents), low or no income
How to apply: At your CAF or via caf.fr. Combined with the monthly contract d'engagement réciproque since 2024 France Travail reform.
Sick child leave
Congé pour enfant malade: 3–5 days/year (Code du travail L1225-61), unpaid unless your convention collective provides for payment. Extended to 14 days for severe illness. Congé de présence parentale: up to 310 days over 3 years, paid via AJPP (€64.54/day, 2026) for children under 20 with serious illness.
Birth registration
Declare birth at the mairie within 5 working days (extended to 8 in overseas territories). Bring the maternity's constatation de naissance, livret de famille (or both parents' CNI/passports and acte de naissance), and reconnaissance de paternité if non-married. You receive the acte de naissance free of charge. Livret de famille is automatically updated or created.
Childcare rights
No statutory right to a guaranteed crèche place exists in France, but école maternelle is compulsory and free from age 3 since 2019. CAF and the mairie guichet unique petite enfance are your entry points. Private crèches, micro-crèches, assmats and garde partagée are subsidised via CMG. Priority for crèche places: single parents, dual-income couples, children with disabilities.
