The letelepedési engedély (national permanent residence) or EU long-term resident status (tartós tartózkodásra jogosult) are the two main permanent residence statuses. EU long-term resident (EU huzamos tartózkodási engedély) provides stronger EU-wide portability rights. Application at Bevándorlási és Menekültügyi Hivatal (BÁH). Processing: 30–60 days. Annual renewal not required — the status is permanent.

Standard naturalisation requires 8 years of continuous residence. The language and knowledge exam is conducted in Hungarian — genuine B1-B2 level is required. Preparation courses are available. The process involves: (1) application at a government window (Kormányablak), (2) background check by security agencies, (3) language/knowledge exam, (4) citizenship oath ceremony. Processing can take 1–3 years. Hungary became a full EU member in 2004, so Hungarian citizenship confers full EU citizenship rights.

This is the path most commonly used by ethnic Hungarians from neighbouring countries (Romania/Transylvania, Slovakia, Serbia/Vojvodina, Ukraine/Zakarpattia) who do not reside in Hungary. Approximately 1 million+ ethnic Hungarians abroad have obtained Hungarian citizenship through this route. If you have Hungarian grandparents or great-grandparents, you may qualify. Only a language interview is required — no written exam, no residency requirement. Very widely used in the Hungarian diaspora.
Citizenship by Marriage (Honosítás — házasság alapján)

The 3-year requirement (vs. 8 years standard) is a significant benefit. The marriage must be genuine and subsisting. The Hungarian citizen spouse does not need to sponsor the application formally — the applicant applies in their own right after meeting the criteria.
Citizenship for Children Born to Hungarian Citizens

Hungarian citizenship is transmitted by descent (ius sanguinis) without generational limit if the Hungarian ancestry can be documented and language criteria are met through the simplified naturalisation route. Children born in Hungary to foreign parents do NOT automatically receive Hungarian citizenship (Hungary does not apply ius soli).
Guest Investor Residence Permit (Vendégbefektetői tartózkodási engedély)
Eligibility
Investors who make a qualifying investment in Hungary under the Guest Investor Programme (launched July 2024) may obtain a 10-year renewable residence permit (extendable for a further 10 years). Two investment options: (1) minimum €250,000 in approved real estate investment fund certificates; (2) €1,000,000 non-refundable donation to a public trust. No minimum stay requirement.

The Guest Investor Permit leads to long-term residency, not direct citizenship. To reach citizenship from this permit, the investor must first obtain EU long-term resident status (requires 5 years of uninterrupted lawful residence in Hungary) and then satisfy the 8-year total continuous residence required for standard naturalisation — meaning the path from investment to citizenship is approximately 8 years minimum and requires actual physical residence. The Hungarian language exam at B1-B2 level is still required for naturalisation. From 2025, Guest Investor visa applicants are exempt from the cultural knowledge test that applies to standard permanent residency applications.

Dual citizenship is allowed — Hungary permits dual (or multiple) citizenship — Hungarian law does not require renunciation of previous nationality upon naturalisation. However, YOUR HOME COUNTRY may not permit dual citizenship — check your home country's laws before naturalising as a Hungarian citizen. Countries with restrictions include Germany (generally must renounce), Japan (renunciation required), China (does not recognise dual), and others. EU countries generally permit dual citizenship. The simplified naturalisation route for ethnic Hungarians has been used by hundreds of thousands of people from neighbouring countries who often hold both their country of residence citizenship AND Hungarian citizenship simultaneously.
