Hungary (HU)
Hungary is a landlocked Central European nation in the heart of the Carpathian Basin — home to one of Europe's most beautiful capital cities (Budapest), one of the oldest parliaments in continuous operation, a notoriously complex but unique language, Europe's largest thermal spring lake (Lake Hévíz), and a culture that blends Magyar warrior heritage, Ottoman influence, Habsburg elegance, and post-communist resilience into something entirely its own.

How to properly exit — protecting your finances, rights and records.
📅 General Timeline
8–12 weeks before leaving: Give rental contract notice, start utility cancellation processes, notify employer and HR. 4–6 weeks before: Deregister address at Kormányablak, notify bank of new address, cancel ongoing subscriptions and direct debits. 2–4 weeks before: Final tax position review with könyvelő, collect TAJ card deregistration confirmation, return any library cards or public service cards. Final week: Joint rental check-out, collect deposit, get all final bills. After leaving: File final SZJA tax return by 20 May of following year, monitor any NAV correspondence via Ügyfélkapu (keep access for at least 1 year after departure), maintain Hungarian mobile number if possible for authentication.
Deregistration
When leaving Hungary, you must deregister your address (lakcím kijelentése) at the Kormányablak or Okmányiroda. This cancels your lakcímkártya and notifies government systems. EU/EEA citizens should also deregister their EU registration certificate (regisztrációs igazolás) with the Bevándorlási Hivatal. Non-EU nationals: your residence permit expires — notify the immigration office if leaving before permit expiry. Deregistration triggers the end of your Hungarian tax residency (if no other ties remain) and stops the accrual of social insurance contributions. Do this at least a few weeks before departure to allow processing time.
Tax clearance
File your final Hungarian personal income tax return (SZJA bevallás) for the year of departure — covering income earned from 1 January until your departure date. File by 20 May of the following year via NAV (nav.gov.hu). If you leave mid-year and have been employed, your employer's year-end withholding reconciliation (összesítő) typically covers your liabilities. Self-employed persons: close their vállalkozói igazolvány (business licence) at welivállalkozó.hu before leaving and file final VAT and income tax returns. Request a tax clearance certificate (adóigazolás) from NAV if needed for visa applications or other official purposes in your destination country. Ensure no outstanding tax debts (adóhátralék) — NAV can place a lien on your departure if significant debts exist.
Pension portability
Hungarian state pension (Nyugdíj) rights are portable — your contribution record (biztosítási idő) is preserved and used to calculate your Hungarian state pension when you reach retirement age (currently 65). If you move to an EU country, Hungary participates in EU social security coordination (Regulation 883/2004) — Hungarian contribution periods can be aggregated with other EU countries for pension qualification. If you move to a non-EU country, check whether Hungary has a bilateral social security totalization agreement. As of 2026, Hungary has bilateral agreements with several non-EU countries. If you contributed to voluntary pension funds (önkéntes nyugdíjpénztár), you can withdraw funds 10 years after joining or keep them for retirement (the tax advantage is maintained if kept until 65). Importantly: Hungary nationalised mandatory private pension savings in 2010 — there is no second-pillar mandatory funded pension to recover.
Health insurance
Hungarian public health insurance (TAJ card access) ends when you deregister your Hungarian address or your employment/contribution obligation ceases. If you are an employee, notify your employer of your leaving date — they will process the final health insurance deregistration (bejelentés a biztosítási jogviszony megszűnéséről) to NEAK. Students should deregister from their educational institution. After deregistration, your TAJ card is no longer valid. Ensure you have health insurance coverage for your transition period — use EHIC in EU countries or arrange private international insurance if moving outside the EU.
Bank account
Hungarian bank accounts can generally remain open after leaving Hungary, but: (1) most banks require a valid Hungarian address — notify your bank of your new address (foreign address often acceptable). (2) Some banks will close accounts with no Hungarian address after a period. (3) For OTP, K&H, Erste: contact your branch to discuss keeping the account active with a foreign address. (4) Neobank options (Revolut, Wise) are worth maintaining for any remaining HUF-denominated transactions. Ensure all outstanding direct debits (csoportos megbízások) are cancelled. Consider keeping a small account open if you have ongoing Hungarian income (rental property) or need to manage Hungarian affairs remotely.
Utilities
Notify all utility providers (electricity, gas, internet, water) of your departure date at least 30 days in advance. Request final meter readings and settlement (záró elszámolás). Utility deposits (kaució) — if any — are returned after final bills are settled. Cancel all direct debits (csoportos megbízások). Internet and mobile contracts may have minimum term penalties — check your contracts. Hungarian utility companies have English-language customer service limited or non-existent — have a Hungarian speaker help if needed.
Rental contract
Most Hungarian residential rental contracts require 30–60 days written notice (felmondási idő). Review your contract (bérleti szerződés) carefully — notice periods vary. Standard practice: provide written notice and conduct a joint check-out inspection (átadás-átvétel) with the landlord. Document the property condition with photographs and video. The landlord should return your deposit (kaució — typically 2 months' rent) within 8–15 days of check-out, less any legitimate deductions for damage beyond normal wear and tear. Request a written settlement. Disputes go through the District Court (Járásbíróság) — free legal aid is limited, so try mediation first.
