Payment Culture
Hungary is increasingly cashless in cities, with card payment accepted in most shops, restaurants, and public transport in Budapest. Contactless payment is standard. However, cash remains widely expected in rural areas, smaller shops, and markets. Hungary is NOT in the Eurozone — euros are not generally accepted, though some tourist establishments may take them at poor rates. Always carry some HUF cash. The forint has historically been volatile against the euro, with significant swings of 10–20% in recent years.
ATM Tips
ATMs (bankautomata) are plentiful in Budapest and major cities. Use bank-affiliated ATMs (OTP, K&H, Erste) rather than standalone ATMs in tourist areas — the latter often charge high fees and offer poor exchange rates with a "dynamic currency conversion" trick. Always choose to be charged in HUF, not your home currency.
Exchange Tips
Use Wise or Revolut for excellent HUF exchange rates and international transfers. Currency exchange offices (váltó) at Budapest's airports and tourist areas often have very unfavourable rates. Banks offer better rates but charge fees. The forint is a freely tradeable currency but subject to significant volatility — be aware of currency risk if converting large sums.
