Állami Foglalkoztatási Szolgálat

Register in person at your local Munkaügyi Hivatal (Employment Centre). Bring: identity document, TAJ card, adóazonosító jel, and work history/CV. You must register as a job seeker (álláskeresőként való nyilvántartásba vétel) to access unemployment benefits and employment services. Registration is also available via Ügyfélkapu online.

💼 Work Permits

EU Citizens

EU/EEA and Swiss citizens have the right to work in Hungary without a work permit. However, you must register your right of residence at the Bevándorlási Hivatal (Immigration Office) if staying more than 90 days and obtain a regisztrációs igazolás. Your employer does not need to obtain special authorisation for you to work.

Non-EU Citizens

Non-EU nationals require a combined residence and work permit (tartózkodási és munkavállalási engedély). The employer typically initiates the process. Common routes: Single Permit (a combined work/residence permit), intracompany transfer, or the EU Blue Card for highly qualified workers. Hungary has an annual immigration quota system that limits non-EU work permits.

EU Blue Card

The EU Blue Card (Kék Kártya) is available for highly qualified non-EU workers with a job offer paying at least 1.5x the Hungarian average salary (HUF 1,001,048/month gross for standard roles; HUF 800,838/month for shortage occupations, effective January 2026). Valid for up to 2 years, renewable. Provides a path to permanent residence and portability within EU.

Freelancer Visa

Hungary introduced a "White Card" (Fehér Kártya) digital nomad visa in 2022 for non-EU nationals working remotely for foreign companies. Valid for 1 year, renewable once. Requires income proof of at least twice the Hungarian minimum wage. Allows working for non-Hungarian clients only.

⏱️ Work Culture

Typical hours 8 hours/day, 40 hours/week standard. Working hours typically 08:00–17:00 or 09:00–18:00. Overtime is common in some sectors, particularly in manufacturing and tech. Lunch break (ebédszünet): typically 30–60 minutes, often taken at the company canteen (menza) or nearby restaurants.

Annual leave 20 days minimum paid annual leave by law, increasing to 21 days after age 25 and progressively more with age (up to 30 days for workers over 45). Additional days for children. Many professional roles offer 25–28 days. Hungarian employees are generally encouraged to take their full leave entitlement.

Sick leave First 15 days of illness per year: employer pays 70% of average daily earnings. From day 16: NEAK pays a sick pay benefit (táppénz) of 60% of average earnings. Doctor's certificate (táppénzes papír) required from the first day of illness for formal sick leave. Many employers have more generous sick pay policies.

Trial period Standard probationary period (próbaidő): up to 3 months, extendable to maximum 6 months by collective agreement. During probation, either party can terminate immediately without notice or reason.

Notice period Minimum notice periods are set by law: 30 days base (employee and employer), increasing by 5 days for each year of service up to a maximum of 90 days. Notice periods are often negotiated in employment contracts. During probation: no notice period required.

Salary range Gross salary ranges vary widely. Minimum wage 2026: HUF 322,800/month (effective January 1, +11% from 2025). Guaranteed minimum (skilled workers with diploma): HUF 373,200/month. Mid-level professional in Budapest (IT, finance, engineering): HUF 550,000–1,300,000/month gross. Senior roles in international companies: HUF 1,000,000–2,500,000+/month gross. Note: net take-home is approximately 64–68% of gross for most employees.

Pay frequency Monthly (havonta). Salaries typically paid on the last working day of the month or a fixed date. The salary is always stated and negotiated as gross (bruttó) — always calculate your net take-home carefully.
