👶 Childcare & Kindergarten

Bölcsőde (Nursery) HUF 5,000–25,000/month (means-tested municipal fee). State-funded, heavily subsidised.

Subsidy available

State-funded municipal nurseries charge a means-tested fee (intézményi térítési díj). Maximum fee is set by municipality. From 2023, children aged 3+ in bölcsőde can transfer to óvoda for free.

Contact your district's óvoda és bölcsőde fenntartó (nursery/kindergarten authority). Apply with birth certificate, TAJ card, and parents' address cards (lakcímkártyák). Assignment is by district — you attend the bölcsőde in your registered district.

⏱️ Municipal bölcsődék have waiting lists, especially in Budapest's inner districts. Apply to multiple municipal nurseries simultaneously. Register with your district (kerület) nursery coordinator (bölcsőde-vezető) as early as possible, ideally during pregnancy.

Óvoda (Kindergarten) Free (education is free). Meals (étkezés): HUF 15,000–30,000/month means-tested.

Subsidy available

Óvoda is compulsory from age 3 in Hungary (since 2015). Education is entirely free. Meal costs are means-tested and subsidised for lower-income families. Large families and social welfare recipients may qualify for free meals.

Compulsory enrollment at your district's assigned municipal óvoda. Annual enrollment period is typically February–March for September start. Contact your kerületi óvoda fenntartó. Documents: birth certificate, vaccination record, address cards, parents' ID.

⏱️ Municipal óvodák are assigned by district. Inner Budapest districts can be competitive — register in January for September enrollment.

International / Private Pre-school HUF 150,000–400,000/month (international schools). Private Hungarian kindergartens: HUF 50,000–150,000/month.

Apply directly to the chosen school. Most international pre-schools in Budapest require: proof of enrollment fee, health certificate, and sometimes language assessment. Popular options: Budapest British International School, Budapest American International School, French International School.

Általános Iskola (Primary School) Free

Általános Iskola

Ages: 6–14 years (grades 1–8) · Language: Hungarian (Magyar). Some schools offer bilingual or minority language education (German, English, Slovak, Croatian, Roma languages).

Enrollment at your district's catchment school. Contact the local school administration with: child's birth certificate, vaccination record (oltási könyv), parents' lakcímkártyák (address cards), and previous school reports if transferring. Annual enrollment in January–February for September start. Non-Hungarian-speaking children may be placed in bridging programmes.

Hungarian primary school (általános iskola) covers grades 1–8 (ages 6–14). Quality varies significantly between schools — particularly between Budapest's inner districts and outer areas. Some families choose private or church-run schools. The Hungarian education system is highly competitive from early grades. State schools are free; only meals and some materials have costs.

Középiskola (Secondary School) Free

Gimnázium / Szakközépiskola / Technikum

Ages: 14–18 years (4-year programme), or 10–18 years (8-year gimnázium) · Language: Hungarian. Some schools offer bilingual programmes (Hungarian-English, Hungarian-German, Hungarian-French).

Admission based on primary school grades and a central admission exam (Felvételi vizsga). Students apply via the central online application system (Oktatási Hivatal). Apply in January–February for September start. International schools available as alternatives.

Three main types: Gimnázium (academic, university-prep), Szakközépiskola/Technikum (vocational with matúra), and Szakiskola (vocational training). The 8-year gimnázium starts from age 10 and is highly competitive in Budapest. The Hungarian Matura (Érettségi vizsga) exam at age 18 determines university access.

International Schools

Budapest has a well-established international school community. Key schools include: Budapest British International School (BBIS — British curriculum, IB), Britannica International School, American International School of Budapest (AISB — US curriculum), Lycée Gustave Eiffel (French curriculum), Deutschsprachige Schule Budapest (German), International Christian School of Budapest. Fees range from HUF 3,000,000–8,000,000/year. Most international schools require application at least 6 months in advance. The Budapest expat community provides strong school networks — ask the AmCham or BCCH for recommendations.

University

Tuition fee

Hungarian state universities (állami egyetem): EU citizens may access subsidised places (állami finanszírozású szak). Self-financed: HUF 300,000–600,000/semester for Hungarian-language programmes. English-language programmes: EUR 2,000–8,000/semester at Corvinus, ELTE, BME, Pécs medical school etc. Major universities: ELTE (Eötvös Loránd University), Corvinus University, Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME), Semmelweis University (medicine), University of Pécs (large medical faculty in English).

Semester fee

No student union/campus fee beyond tuition. Dormitory (kollégium): HUF 30,000–80,000/month. Student canteens (menzák) offer heavily subsidised meals.

Student visa

EU/EEA students need only register their right of residence. Non-EU students need a student residence permit (tartózkodási engedély hallgatóként) — applied for at the Immigration Office with university acceptance letter.

Health insurance

EU students covered by their home country EHIC card for emergency care + register for Hungarian healthcare. Non-EU students must arrange private health insurance or pay for TAJ contributions. Hungary's medical universities attract many non-EU students, particularly for English-medium medicine — check specific requirements.

Application process

EU citizens apply through the Hungarian central application system (felvi.hu) for Hungarian-language programmes. English-medium programmes have separate applications. Closing dates: January–February for September starts. Required: school transcripts, matriculation certificate (Matura equivalent), language certificate, motivation letter.

Free for certain non-EU residents under integration obligation. EU citizens pay market rates: HUF 60,000–150,000/course.

Non-EU nationals granted long-term residence in Hungary have an integration obligation including basic Hungarian language. Contact your local immigration office.

Budapest Language Schools (Private)

Hungarian is genuinely one of the world's hardest languages — plan for at least 2–3 years to reach conversational level. The Debrecen Summer School is the most famous intensive Hungarian course in the world, running since 1927.

Online Hungarian Learning
