Ügyfélkapu+ / Ügyfélkapu (Client Gateway)
Hungary's central e-government authentication and communication system. Ügyfélkapu (Client Gateway) is the portal through which ALL official government communications are sent and through which you access virtually all Hungarian government services online. Think of it as the Hungarian equivalent of Denmark's MitID + e-Boks combined. The original Ügyfélkapu is being migrated to the upgraded Ügyfélkapu+ system in 2025–2026, featuring stronger multi-factor authentication.
How to get it: Register at ugyfelkapu.gov.hu. Initial registration can be done: (1) Online via the portal with Hungarian ID number and mobile phone number; (2) In person at any Kormányablak (Government Window) with your ID and adóazonosító jel; (3) Via a registered bank (Telebank/OTP etc.) for bank-verified identity. For Ügyfélkapu+ (the new system): additional mobile app authentication required. Non-Hungarians: registration requires your Hungarian adóazonosító jel and registered Hungarian address. EU citizens and foreign residents with a Hungarian address can register.
E-Government Portal
https://ugyfelkapu.gov.huÜgyfélkapu is the single most critical digital service in Hungary — treat it like your official government inbox. Check it regularly. ALL official government communications (tax notices, immigration correspondence, benefit decisions, court documents) are delivered exclusively to Ügyfélkapu. Messages sent there are legally deemed received even if you don't open them. IMPORTANT: Hungary is transitioning from Ügyfélkapu to Ügyfélkapu+ (stronger 2FA authentication) in 2025–2026 — follow government communications about the migration timeline and ensure you complete the upgrade when required.

Hungary's digital government infrastructure is comprehensive but almost entirely in Hungarian. The Ügyfélkapu system is critical — register immediately upon arrival. The transition to Ügyfélkapu+ (upgraded system with mobile app authentication) is underway in 2025–2026 — complete this upgrade when prompted. AVDH (Azonosításra Visszavezetett Dokumentumhitelesítés) is a digital document authentication service within Ügyfélkapu — you can digitally sign documents with legal validity. Online Számla (onlineszamla.nav.gov.hu) is mandatory for all B2B invoices — essential for any business or self-employed person. Internet connectivity in Hungary is excellent — Budapest has widespread 4G/5G coverage and fast fibre broadband at very affordable prices (DIGI offers excellent value).
