Hungary (HU)
Hungary is a landlocked Central European nation in the heart of the Carpathian Basin — home to one of Europe's most beautiful capital cities (Budapest), one of the oldest parliaments in continuous operation, a notoriously complex but unique language, Europe's largest thermal spring lake (Lake Hévíz), and a culture that blends Magyar warrior heritage, Ottoman influence, Habsburg elegance, and post-communist resilience into something entirely its own.
Insurance Guide
Which insurances you actually need in Hungary, prioritised.
Hungary's insurance market is well-developed with a mix of international (Allianz, Generali, UNIQA, AXA) and domestic (OTP Biztosító, Aegon Hungary) providers. Third-party liability car insurance (kötelező gépjármű-felelősségbiztosítás — KGFB) is the only legally mandatory insurance in Hungary. Health insurance is accessed through social contributions (TAJ card system) rather than private insurance for most residents. Private supplementary insurance is increasingly popular among expats and the Hungarian middle class, particularly for healthcare and home insurance.
Legally Mandatory
- - KGFB (Kötelező Gépjármű-Felelősségbiztosítás) — Compulsory motor third-party liability insurance. Mandatory for all vehicles registered in Hungary. Must be purchased before driving a Hungarian-registered vehicle on public roads.
KGFB — Compulsory Motor Third-Party Liability
Covers damage and injuries caused to third parties in traffic accidents. Does not cover your own vehicle or injuries.
Who needs it: Every person owning or driving a Hungarian-registered motor vehicle. Without it, driving is illegal and you face a fine plus supplementary insurance levy.
Annual cost: HUF 25,000–80,000/year depending on vehicle category, driver age/history, and insurer
Compare KGFB prices at biztositasosszehasonlito.hu or through insurance brokers. Prices vary significantly. Pay annually for a discount. A Hungarian-registered vehicle without KGFB incurs daily penalty charges.
Property Insurance (for Homeowners)
Covers the building structure and permanent fixtures against fire, storm, water damage, and other risks. Required by mortgage lenders.
Who needs it: All homeowners, mandatory when mortgage financed.
Annual cost: HUF 30,000–120,000/year depending on property value and location
If you have a mortgage (jelzáloghitel), the bank will require property insurance. Ensure the insured value (biztosítási összeg) reflects rebuilding cost, not market value.
Casco — Comprehensive Car Insurance
Covers your own vehicle for damage, theft, vandalism, and accident damage regardless of fault. Typically includes glass damage, weather damage, and fire.
Who needs it: Anyone with a newer or financed vehicle. Banks financing car purchases typically require casco. Strongly recommended for cars over HUF 2,000,000 value.
Annual cost: HUF 60,000–250,000+/year depending on vehicle value and coverage level
Full casco (teljeskörű casco) is the most comprehensive. Partial casco (részleges casco) covers only certain events (theft, fire, glass). Deductibles (önrészesedés) typically 10–20% of claim.
Home Contents Insurance
Covers your home contents (furniture, electronics, valuables) against fire, theft, water damage, and other insured events. Usually includes personal liability (felelősségbiztosítás).
Who needs it: All renters and homeowners. Rental contracts in Hungary often require or strongly recommend contents insurance. Essential for anyone with valuable possessions.
Annual cost: HUF 20,000–60,000/year for a typical Budapest apartment
Compare at biztositasosszehasonlito.hu. Check exclusions carefully — flooding may not be covered in certain zones. Contents insurance for renters (bérlői biztosítás) is a specific product. Personal liability coverage (felelősség) is usually bundled and covers accidental damage to others.
Private Health Insurance / Supplementary Health
Supplements the public TAJ card system. Covers private clinic visits, specialist care, diagnostics, dental (possibly), and hospitality upgrades.
Who needs it: Expats who want reliable English-speaking healthcare without public system waiting times. Highly recommended for all non-Hungarians unfamiliar with the public system.
Annual cost: HUF 250,000–700,000+/year for comprehensive individual cover. Many employers provide as benefit.
Corporate health insurance is a highly competitive benefit in Budapest's international job market. If your employer does not provide it, negotiate it. International insurance (Cigna, AXA, Allianz Care) provides portability if you move countries. Domestic Hungarian health insurance (Medicover, Allianz Hungary) is valid only in Hungary.
Life Insurance
Pays a lump sum or regular income to beneficiaries on death (or critical illness, depending on policy). Can also serve as savings/investment vehicle (unit-linked).
Who needs it: Anyone with dependants or mortgage obligations.
Annual cost: HUF 50,000–200,000+/year depending on coverage level and age
Term life insurance (haláleseti kockázati biztosítás) is the simplest and most affordable. Unit-linked life insurance (unit-linked életbiztosítás) combines life coverage with investment — be cautious about fees and surrender charges. Banks often push bundled life insurance with mortgage products.
Travel Insurance
Covers emergency medical care, trip cancellation, lost luggage, and repatriation during international travel.
Who needs it: All travellers outside Hungary/EU. Mandatory for Schengen visa holders (minimum €30,000 medical coverage). Recommended for all.
Annual cost: Single trip: HUF 5,000–20,000. Annual multi-trip: HUF 20,000–60,000
Hungarian residents travelling within EU can use EHIC for basic EU emergency healthcare. Travel insurance adds cancellation, luggage, and non-EU cover. Annual policies are better value for frequent travellers.
Liability Insurance (Personal)
Covers you if you accidentally cause injury or property damage to a third party in everyday life (not in traffic accidents). Often bundled with home insurance.
Who needs it: Renters, families with children, pet owners. Very affordable and provides important protection.
Annual cost: Typically bundled into home/contents insurance at no extra cost, or HUF 5,000–15,000/year standalone
Personal liability (magánszemély felelősségbiztosítás) is typically included in comprehensive home insurance packages in Hungary. Check whether your policy includes this coverage.
Comparison sites
KGFB (car insurance) must be sorted before driving your Hungarian-registered vehicle — penalties for non-compliance are significant and automatic.
Compare prices annually — Hungarian insurance prices vary significantly between providers and renewal is often a good opportunity to switch.
Bundle policies where possible — combining car + home + life often yields a 5–15% discount.
Hungarian insurance contracts are typically annual (egyéves). Auto-renewal (tacit renewal) is common — give 30-day notice before renewal date if you want to switch.
Document everything before signing — ensure you have the policy document (biztosítási kötvény) and that all declarations are accurate.
For international expats: private international health insurance (Cigna, AXA, Allianz Care) that is portable between countries is often more valuable than domestic Hungarian health insurance if you expect to move again.
