Get a Qatar driving licence

Foreign driving licences are valid for 7 days only after QID issuance. You must convert or obtain a Qatari licence. GCC licence holders: direct exchange. UK, US, EU, Canadian, Australian licence holders: exchange without test. Other nationalities: may require full test.

Enrol children in school

Qatar has an excellent network of international schools. Government schools are primarily for Qatari nationals and Arab residents. International schools (British, American, Indian CBSE, IB, French) are most common for expats. Apply early — top schools have waiting lists 12+ months in advance.

All new residents must pass a medical fitness test covering HIV, hepatitis B/C, tuberculosis, and syphilis. This is mandatory for QID issuance and cannot be skipped. Tested at approved HMC laboratories or MOI-designated private clinics.

Confirm NHIC health insurance (Seha card) is activated

Qatar mandates employer-provided NHIC-compliant health insurance for all employees. Your Seha card is proof of coverage — carry it at all times. Without it, you pay private rates at hospitals (QAR 200–2,000+ per visit). Confirm activation with HR within your first week.

Apply for dependent visas for family members

Sponsors with a minimum salary of QAR 4,000/month (QAR 10,000 for independent family sponsorship) can bring immediate family (spouse, children). Dependent QID must be obtained for each family member. Each dependent needs their own medical fitness test.

Renew your QID before expiry — do not let it lapse

QID must be renewed annually (or per your work permit cycle). Overstay fine: QAR 200/day. Renew at least 1 month before expiry via Metrash2, Hukoomi, or at the MOI service centre. Your employer's PRO usually manages this — confirm the process.

Obtain your Qatar ID (QID)

The Qatar ID (QID) is your most essential document in Qatar — without it you cannot open a bank account, get a driving licence, sign a lease, or access most government services. Your employer must sponsor your residency permit application, which produces your QID. Ensure HR starts the process before or immediately on arrival.

Register your vehicle and get mandatory car insurance

If you purchase a car in Qatar, register it at the MOI Traffic Department within 30 days. Third-party liability (TPL/Khaatir) insurance is legally mandatory — arrange it before registration. Comprehensive insurance is strongly recommended given Qatar's high accident rate.

Complete pet import process

Importing pets (dogs and cats) into Qatar requires USDA/APHIS or equivalent health certificate, microchip, rabies vaccination, and import permit from the Ministry of Municipality. Some breeds are banned. Check your compound's pet policy before committing.

Always carry your QID — it serves as your ID everywhere

In Qatar, the QID (Qatar ID / Iqama) is required at every official interaction — banks, hospitals, government offices, police stops, and even some hotel check-ins. It also proves your legal status in the country. Losing your QID must be reported to police immediately.

Register young children in nursery or daycare

Qatar has a strong network of private nurseries for children aged 0–3. Unlike Germany, there is no public nursery system or legal right to a nursery place — all are private and paid. Most international compounds have on-site or nearby nurseries. Apply early — quality nurseries in Pearl-Qatar and West Bay have waiting lists.

Register with a PHCC health centre (your GP)

Register at your nearest PHCC health centre — Qatar's equivalent of a GP practice. PHCC is the gateway to the public healthcare system, specialist referrals, prescriptions, sick notes, and ongoing care. All 28 PHCC centres are covered by your Seha card with minimal co-pay (QAR 20).

Create a document folder for all Qatar paperwork

Organise physical and digital copies of every critical Qatar document: QID (front and back), passport (all pages), employment contract, Seha insurance card, vehicle registration, lease contract, tenancy receipt history, medical fitness test results, and attestation certificates. Many Qatar government processes, bank transactions, and employer requests require documents at short notice — having them organised prevents delays.

Set up a calendar for QID, passport, and insurance expiry dates

In Qatar, three documents require active renewal tracking: (1) QID — renewable annually or bi-annually depending on your visa type; (2) Passport — most countries issue 10-year passports, but Qatar requires your passport to have at least 6 months validity at all times; (3) Seha health insurance — renewed annually by your employer. An expired QID means you cannot drive, use government services, or leave Qatar without complications.

Open a Qatar bank account

A local bank account is essential for receiving your salary, paying rent (many landlords require local bank transfer), and managing daily expenses. QNB is the most popular for expats; Commercial Bank and Doha Bank are solid alternatives.

Get a Qatari SIM card (Ooredoo or Vodafone Qatar)

A local SIM is essential for WhatsApp (text only — calls blocked), government app notifications, and daily life. Both Ooredoo and Vodafone Qatar operate. Ooredoo has wider coverage; Vodafone competitive data plans.

Set up home internet (Ooredoo or Vodafone Qatar)

Qatar has excellent fibre broadband coverage in most Doha residential areas. Both Ooredoo (market leader) and Vodafone Qatar offer home broadband. Speeds: 100Mbps–1Gbps. Average installation: 3–7 working days.

Set up Botim for voice and video calls

WhatsApp voice calls, FaceTime, Skype, and most VoIP apps are blocked in Qatar. Botim is a licensed VoIP app that works in Qatar. Many expat families use it to video call home. Available on iOS and Android. Monthly subscription: QAR 15/month.

Set up Talabat and grocery delivery apps

Qatar's heat makes food and grocery delivery a daily necessity for many expats. Talabat is the dominant food delivery platform. LuLu and Carrefour apps offer same-day grocery delivery to most Doha addresses. These apps cover you during the summer months (June–September) when outdoor activity is minimised.

Apply for a QDC permit to purchase alcohol (if non-Muslim)

Non-Muslim residents can apply for a permit to purchase alcohol from the Qatar Distribution Company (QDC) — Qatar's only off-licence. The permit allows purchasing a monthly allocation based on salary. Application requires employer's letter and minimum salary threshold.

Set up a sports or gym membership at compound or Aspire Zone

Qatar has world-class sports and fitness facilities. Aspire Zone (home of the 2006 Asian Games) is open to all residents with excellent facilities at low cost. Most compounds include a gym and pool. Private gyms (Gold's Gym Qatar, BodyMasters, Fitness First) are available across Doha. Sports are best done October–April when temperatures are 15–30°C.

Prepare for Ramadan restrictions and summer heat protocols

Qatar has two major annual lifestyle adjustments: (1) Ramadan (approx. March–April 2026) — eating, drinking, and smoking in public is illegal during daylight hours for everyone, including non-Muslims. Work hours are reduced by 2 hours. (2) Summer (June–September) — temperatures reach 40–50°C. Outdoor activity should be minimised 10am–5pm. Outdoor work is banned 10:00–15:30 by law.

Register on Hukoomi (Qatar e-government portal)

Hukoomi (hukoomi.gov.qa) is Qatar's unified e-government portal giving access to 600+ government services including QID renewal, birth/death registration, business licensing, and MOFA services.

Understand Qatar Labour Law EOSG rights from day one

Under Qatar Labour Law, all employees are entitled to an End of Service Gratuity (EOSG) of 3 weeks' basic salary per year of service (first 5 years), and 4 weeks thereafter. This is payable within 7 days of leaving service. Keep records of your basic salary across all years — this is separate from the detailed tracking task in the welfare section.

Understand your employment rights under Qatar Labour Law

Qatar Labour Law No. 14/2004 (amended 2020) protects all employees. Key rights: 21 days paid annual leave (rising to 30 days after 5 years), 48-hour maximum work week, sick leave (100% pay for first 2 weeks), EOSG accrual from day 1, and the right to change employer after 1 year of service. All family members with a Qatar QID and NHIC Seha card should register with a PHCC health centre for their GP, paediatric, and obstetric care. Children's vaccinations (mandated by Qatar) are provided free at PHCC. Register each family member separately at your nearest health centre.

Prepare your summer routine for Qatar's extreme heat

Qatar summer (June–September) is genuinely dangerous without preparation. Temperatures reach 44–50°C with humidity above 80%. Essential summer routine: drink 3–4 litres of water daily (not just when thirsty); apply SPF 50+ sunscreen for any outdoor time; park in shade or use a windscreen sun cover; avoid outdoor activity 10:00–16:00; keep your car AC serviced; stock water bottles in your car. Qatar courts can impose travel bans on individuals with outstanding civil or criminal cases — including unpaid rent, bounced cheques, unpaid fines, and labour disputes. Qatar's Cybercrime Prevention Law (No. 14/2014) and Penal Code strictly prohibit online posts criticising the Qatari state, ruling family, Islam, or Qatari culture. Most countries recommend citizens living abroad register with their nearest embassy or consulate. This ensures you receive emergency assistance, evacuation notices, and voting information. Doha hosts embassies for most major nations.

Your Qatar QID and driving licence are tied to your passport validity. If your passport expires, your QID renewal may be delayed. Qatar requires that your passport has at least 6 months validity remaining. Qatar's main emergency number is 999 (police, fire, and ambulance). The Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) emergency is at Hamad General Hospital (HGH). Know the location of your nearest PHCC health centre. Keep your employer's emergency contact, your home country embassy emergency line, and ADLSA worker hotline (16008) saved.

Confirm zero Qatar income tax and check home-country filing obligations

Qatar has zero personal income tax — every riyal you earn is kept in full. There are no income tax returns to file in Qatar, no PAYE deductions, and no capital gains tax. However, your home country may still require you to file tax returns on worldwide income depending on your tax residency status. UK citizens: check HMRC split-year treatment and non-resident status. US citizens: always file IRS returns on worldwide income regardless of residence. Australian citizens: assess tax residency status with the ATO.

Get a Doha Metro Alhob Card for public transport

The Doha Metro (Gold, Red, Green lines) and Mowasalat buses are Qatar's public transport network. The Alhob (love) contactless card works on all Metro and bus routes. Load credit at any Metro station machine or the Qatar Rail app.

Check and pay outstanding traffic fines regularly

Qatar's extensive speed and traffic camera network generates fines that accumulate silently on your vehicle and QID record. Unpaid fines block QID renewal, vehicle registration renewal, and departure from Qatar. Check Metrash2 monthly and pay promptly. Fines range from QAR 200 (parking) to QAR 10,000 (reckless driving).

Track your End of Service Gratuity entitlement

End of Service Gratuity (EOSG / مكافأة نهاية الخدمة) is the only mandatory retirement-linked benefit for expats in Qatar. Formula: 3 weeks of basic salary per year of service for the first 5 years; 4 weeks per year from year 6 onwards. Calculation is based on basic salary only — housing and transport allowances are excluded. After 5 years at QAR 12,000 basic/month your EOSG = approximately QAR 62,303. Claim EOSG from your employer on departure — not from the government.
