Qatar (QA)
Qatar is the world's wealthiest nation per capita — a small but extraordinarily ambitious Gulf state sitting atop the world's largest natural gas reserves.
Healthcare in Qatar
Qatar operates a mandatory national health insurance system (NHIC) requiring all employers to provide Seha-compliant health insurance for employees and their dependants. The public system (Hamad Medical Corporation / PHCC) delivers high-quality care, while a thriving private sector caters to those with premium plans. All residents must carry their Seha card. Healthcare quality is among the best in the Middle East — HMC hospitals are internationally accredited (JCI).
Ranked in the top 10 globally for healthcare quality by some indices; consistently ranked #1 in the Middle East (WHO/Legatum Health Index 2024).

Private healthcare: Private Hospitals and Clinics
Accessing care
Primary care is provided through PHCC (Primary Health Care Corporation) — 28 health centres across Qatar. Your nearest PHCC health centre is your GP entry point. Register with a specific centre via the Seha app or at the centre itself. Same-day appointments possible; for non-urgent: 1–3 days wait. PHCC doctors manage chronic conditions, referrals, and preventive care.
Referral from PHCC GP required for most HMC specialist consultations. Private clinics can be seen directly without referral (higher co-pay or self-pay). PHCC e-referral system: digital referrals processed within 1–3 working days. Waiting time for non-urgent specialists at HMC: 2–8 weeks. Private clinics: 1–5 days.
Hamad General Hospital (HGH) in Doha is the main A&E — world-class trauma and emergency care. Call 999 for ambulance. Al Wakra and Al Khor hospitals serve south/north Qatar respectively. Nearest PHCC with minor injury unit for non-life-threatening emergencies. Emergency care is provided regardless of insurance status — payment sorted afterwards.
Some PHCC health centres operate 24 hours. HMC emergency departments are always open. Private clinics: hours vary — many operate evenings and weekends. PHCC call centre: 4407 0000 for advice.
Prescriptions issued by PHCC or HMC doctors are filled at PHCC pharmacies (heavily subsidised — many generics free or QAR 5–10). Private clinic prescriptions: filled at private pharmacies — branded medications QAR 30–200+. The eRx system allows electronic prescriptions across PHCC and HMC facilities.
PHCC dental clinics: basic dental (extractions, fillings) covered with Seha basic plan. Advanced dental (crowns, implants, orthodontics) not covered — use private dental clinics (QAR 300–2,000 per procedure). Popular private: Dr. Abdulrahman Dental Centre, AADENT, Smile Hub, Horizon Dental.
Hamad Mental Health Hospital: inpatient and outpatient psychiatric care. PHCC: mental health officers at health centres for counselling referrals. Private: Weill Cornell Medicine Qatar, American Hospital Doha, various licensed psychologists. Growing awareness and resources post-2022. Therapy wait times: 2–6 weeks at HMC; 1–2 weeks private.
Sidra Medicine: world-class women's and children's hospital (JCI-accredited). HMC Women's Hospital (Hamad Hospital) also available. Antenatal care begins at PHCC; specialist care at Sidra. C-section and normal delivery: covered by Seha. Private delivery at Al Ahli Hospital or The View Hospital: QAR 5,000–15,000 out-of-pocket if not covered.
