Public Transport Overview

Qatar's public transport network has expanded dramatically since the 2022 World Cup. The Doha Metro (Qatar Rail) has three lines serving central Doha, the airport, Education City, and Lusail. Mowasalat (Karwa) operates an extensive bus network. The Lusail Light Rail Transit (LRT) serves Lusail city. Despite improvements, most residents — especially those outside central Doha — rely on private cars due to spread-out urban geography and extreme summer heat making walking impractical.

Taxi & Rideshare

Karwa (government-regulated): metered taxis available but increasingly rare on the street — book via the Karwa app or hail from designated taxi ranks (hotels, malls, Metro stations). Starting meter: QAR 4; QAR 1.6/km. Karwa is reliable but sometimes slow to respond. Most residents prefer Uber or Careem for convenience and transparent pricing.

Rideshare (Long-distance)

Uber is the most widely used ride-hailing app in Qatar — reliable, English-language, transparent pricing, all drivers registered and vetted. Average Uber: QAR 15–40 for intra-Doha journeys. UberX, Uber Comfort, and Uber Black available. Careem (Uber subsidiary) also operates. Tip through app — no need for cash. Surge pricing common during peak times (7–9am, 5–7pm, major events). Both apps available on iOS and Android.

Cycling

Cycling infrastructure is improving but still limited — Qatar's extreme summer heat (45°C+) makes cycling impractical June–September. The Doha Corniche has a 7km cycling path. Lusail City is being designed as a cycling-friendly district with dedicated lanes. Aspire Zone (sports complex): cycling paths within the park. Cycling culture is growing among expat fitness enthusiasts October–March. Bikes available from Sharek bike-sharing in specific zones. Helmet not legally required but strongly advised.

Intercity Trains

No intercity train service connecting Qatar to other countries (Qatar is a peninsula — only land border is Saudi Arabia, which has no regular rail connection). Qatar Rail operates within the Doha metropolitan area and to Lusail only. Intercity travel to Saudi Arabia: by road via the Saudi border crossing (2–3 hours to Dammam) or by air.

Driving

Most residents rely on private cars. Qatar has an extensive modern road network including the Expressway (outer ring road), Doha Expressway, and multiple ring roads. Petrol prices in 2026: QAR 2.10/litre (Super 95, June 2026 — government-set quarterly rate) — among the cheapest in the world, set by the government quarterly. Traffic is heavy 7–9am and 4–7pm in Doha. Qatar drives on the right. Speed limits: 80–120 km/h on expressways (variable sign boards), 60–80 km/h inner roads, 30–50 km/h residential. Aggressive driving is common — maintain safe following distance. In summer: AC essential from minute 1 in the car. The Lusail Expressway (completed 2023) has improved north–south commuting significantly.

Airports

Hamad International Airport (HIA) — Doha's main international hub and Qatar Airways' home base. Consistently ranked among the world's best airports (Skytrax #1 multiple years). Terminal is a single building with extensive duty-free, restaurants, a 25-metre swimming pool, art installations, and 5-star hotel (Oryx Airport Hotel) within the terminal. Doha Metro Gold/Red Line: direct connection from city centre (15–20 minutes to West Bay). Karwa Airport taxi: regulated fare to central Doha QAR 40–60. Uber from HIA: QAR 35–70 depending on destination. International connections: 160+ destinations on Qatar Airways. Terminal 2 (under construction): future domestic and low-cost carrier terminal.
