Qatar has world-class sports infrastructure built for and after the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Aspire Zone (sports city) is the centrepiece — a 250-hectare facility with an Olympic-standard athletics track, aquatic centre, 45,000-seat Khalifa International Stadium, and Aspetar hospital. The 8 World Cup stadiums continue to host local leagues, concerts, and events in 2026. Qatar National Sports Day 2026 falls on the second Tuesday of February — a public holiday with free access to sports facilities across Doha.
Sports Club Culture
Sports clubs and leisure facilities are plentiful. Monthly gym membership: QAR 200–600. Many compounds include gym, pool, and sports courts in the compound fee. Doha Hash House Harriers: weekly running social club — one of Qatar's longest-running expat institutions. Multiple golf clubs: Doha Golf Club (championship course), Education City Golf Club. Cricket leagues, rugby, tennis, squash, and padel are all active.

The Doha Corniche (7km waterfront promenade): walking, jogging, cycling path — most popular outdoor space. Aspire Park: large green park around Aspire Zone — excellent for jogging and family picnics. Wakrah Promenade, Katara Beach (private beach club), Banana Island Resort (day trips). Kayaking, paddleboarding, and kitesurfing: available at Katara, The Pearl, and Banana Island. Qatar has several inland sabkha (salt flat) areas and desert dunes accessible by 4WD — desert camping October–April is a major Qatari leisure activity.
Public swimming is limited — most pools are hotel pools (day passes QAR 100–300) or compound pools. Aspire Zone Aquatic Centre (Olympic pool) available by membership. PHCC health centres do not have swimming facilities. Qatar National Museum and Katara Cultural Village have limited public beach/water access.
Volunteering
Volunteering opportunities in Qatar are available though fewer than in Western countries — NGO restrictions apply. In 2026, volunteering continues to expand through Qatar Foundation and Qatar Charity programmes. Key areas: Ramadan charitable distributions (Ramadan 2026: approximately February 18 – March 19), school volunteering, sports events, cultural festivals (Katara Cultural Village, Museum of Islamic Art), and humanitarian organisations.

No tax benefit for volunteering (Qatar has no income tax). Some employers recognise volunteering as part of CSR commitments.
