Digital Services

Digital ID, e-government and essential apps in Qatar.

Qatar ID (QID) Digital

The Qatar ID (QID) card functions as the national digital identity. The QID number is used across all government digital platforms. A digital version of the QID is stored in the Metrash2 app. Qatar has been rapidly developing integrated digital government services under the Qatar National Vision 2030 and Qatar Digital Agenda.

How to get it: Physical QID issued by Ministry of Interior as part of the residency permit process. Digital version available via Metrash2 app after QID issuance. Register on Hukoomi (hukoomi.gov.qa) using your QID number for access to the full e-government portal.

Qatar's digital government infrastructure is excellent and improving rapidly. Most common MOI services (QID status, traffic fines, travel ban checks) are best handled through the Metrash2 app rather than the Hukoomi portal. Online payment accepts Visa, Mastercard, and Mada (GCC debit) cards. Arabic and English interfaces available throughout. The Hukoomi portal is the gateway to the full ecosystem of 30+ government ministry portals.

WhatsApp text messages work fine in Qatar — only voice and video calls are blocked. For calls: use Botim (licensed, paid) or ZOOM (on licensed corporate accounts). Note that some VPN apps are widely used by expats but exist in a legal grey area — using them for personal privacy is generally tolerated, but Qatar's cyber crime laws are strictly enforced for other uses. Qatar has excellent broadband (fibre) and 5G mobile coverage in all urban areas. Internet speeds: typically 100–500Mbps on fixed broadband. Mobile 5G: Ooredoo and Vodafone both have extensive 5G coverage in Doha. In 2026, Qatar continues its Qatar Digital Agenda 2030 rollout — additional government services are being digitalised quarterly. Check Hukoomi for newly available e-services each year.
