Job seekers register at the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs (ADLSA). The Qatarisation policy (Tawteen) requires companies over a certain size to fill a percentage of roles with Qatari nationals. For expats, the public employment service is mainly useful for resolving disputes and understanding your rights.

EU Citizens

EU citizens have no special status in Qatar — they require a work visa just like all other nationalities. Qatar's kafala system applies equally. No freedom of movement agreements between Qatar and EU.

Non-EU Citizens

All expatriates need an employer-sponsored work visa (Employment Visa) before working in Qatar. The employer applies from Qatar before the employee arrives. Work permits are tied to the employer/sponsor — changing jobs requires a formal process (NOC or 1-month notice after 1 year of service under 2020 reforms). Banned: working for any employer other than your sponsor without prior approval.

EU Blue Card

Qatar does not use the EU Blue Card system. Qatar's equivalent premium work visa is the standard Employment Visa with no separate "skilled worker" classification, though QatarEnergy and other major employers have premium "professional" tracks with superior packages.

Freelancer Visa

No formal freelance visa exists. Freelancers typically incorporate through the QFC (Qatar Financial Centre) as a QFC company, which provides a business visa/residence permit independent of employment. QFC route is strongly recommended for independent consultants and service providers.

⏱️ Work Culture

Typical hours 8–9 hours/day, 5–6 days per week. The Qatari working week is Sunday–Thursday for government and many private sector companies. International companies often follow Monday–Friday. The 2021 Labour Law amendment: maximum 48 hours/week; overtime paid at 125–150% rate. In 2026, Qatarisation (Tawteen) requirements are increasingly enforced — companies above size thresholds must show annual progress toward Qatari national hiring targets, which affects some expat role availability in Qatari-owned companies.

Annual leave Minimum 3 weeks (21 days) annual leave after 1 year of service. Many professional packages offer 30–40 days including national holidays. Plus public holidays (National Day, Eid etc.).

Sick leave Qatar Labour Law: full pay for first 2 weeks sick leave; 50% pay for weeks 3–4; no pay from week 5 up to a maximum of 12 weeks, then employer may terminate. Sick leave requires a doctor's certificate from day 1.

Trial period Maximum 6 months probationary period. During probation, either party can terminate with 1 week's notice. EOSG does not accrue during probation (though this is being contested legally).

Notice period Typically 1–3 months in employment contracts. Labour Law minimum: 1 month (for contracts under 5 years); longer for senior roles as specified in contract.

Salary range 2026 benchmarks: QAR 7,000–15,000/month (entry-mid level with allowances). QAR 15,000–40,000/month (senior professional). QAR 40,000–100,000+/month (C-suite and oil & gas senior management). Packages often include: basic salary + housing allowance (20–40% of total) + transport allowance + annual flights home + school fees for children. QatarEnergy contractor day rates 2026: USD 500–1,500/day for specialist technical roles.

Pay frequency Monthly. Qatar's Wage Protection System (WPS) mandates salary payment by the last day of the month. Employers who delay payments are flagged by the Ministry of Labour.
