Qatar (QA)
Qatar is the world's wealthiest nation per capita — a small but extraordinarily ambitious Gulf state sitting atop the world's largest natural gas reserves.
Family Rights & Benefits
Maternity, parental leave and child benefits in Qatar.
Qatar's family law for expatriates is governed by Sharia law for Muslims and personal status law for non-Muslims in some respects. Non-Muslim expat families generally follow their home country's family law in matters of marriage and inheritance (especially if their country has a DTA or through the QICDRC). However, in practice, many family law matters in Qatar (divorce, child custody) can become complicated for expats. The Qatar Foundation for Social Work (QFSW) and the Family Counselling Centre provide support services.
Maternity Leave (إجازة الأمومة)
Before birth: 0 weeks before birth (Qatar Labour Law does not specify a mandatory pre-birth leave period — maternity leave begins at birth). As of 2026, proposed amendments to extend pre-natal leave are under discussion at ADLSA — check for updates.
After birth: Minimum 50 days (approximately 7 weeks) after birth — paid at full salary. Many professional contracts offer 60–90 days. The mother may take an additional unpaid period with employer agreement.
Job protection: Employer cannot terminate a pregnant employee or one on maternity leave. Notice of termination during pregnancy or maternity leave is illegal. After return: workplace adjustments for nursing mothers (nursing breaks) for up to 1 year after birth if requested. In practice, job security during and after maternity leave varies significantly by employer.
Paternity Leave (إجازة الأبوة)
Max duration: 3–5 days (paternity leave is not mandated by the 2004 Labour Law; however, updated 2020 regulations encourage 3 days and many employers provide this). International companies typically offer 1–2 weeks.
Split rules / Elterngeld: No formal shared parental leave system in Qatar — maternity leave belongs to the mother; paternity leave is minimal and employer-discretionary.
Benefits
School Fees Allowance (Employer-Provided)
QAR 12,000–55,000/year per child depending on school and employer policy
Duration: Annual benefit as long as employed with employer offering it
Eligibility: Expatriate employees with school-age children. Part of professional expatriate package — verify in employment contract. Not a government benefit.
How to apply: Negotiate as part of employment contract before accepting offer. Some employers: fixed annual allowance; others: reimburse actual school fees up to a cap.
One of the most valuable expat benefits — international school fees are QAR 12,000–55,000/year. If not included in your package, factor this into salary negotiations.
Annual Return Flights (Employer-Provided)
Economy class return flights to home country for employee and dependants: value QAR 3,000–8,000+/year
Duration: Annual — as long as employed
Eligibility: Professional expatriate employees. Standard in major corporate packages (QatarEnergy, banks, hospitals, international companies).
How to apply: Confirm in employment contract. Some employers provide cash equivalent; others book flights directly.
Some packages offer annual flights for the whole family; others: employee only + allowance for family. Get specifics in writing.
Housing Allowance (Employer-Provided)
QAR 3,000–15,000/month depending on role seniority and family size
Duration: Throughout employment
Eligibility: Most professional expatriate packages include housing allowance or company-provided accommodation.
How to apply: Specified in employment contract. Some employers provide accommodation directly (compounds) — check if utilities included.
Qatar's rents are high — housing allowance is often the most financially significant part of your package after basic salary. Senior packages may include villa accommodation in compounds with pool and security.
Child's Education Support (PHCC/HMC — healthcare)
Covered by NHIC Seha health insurance for all family members on dependant QID
Duration: While QID and health insurance valid
Eligibility: All dependent children with valid QID and Seha health insurance
How to apply: Register children at nearest PHCC health centre once QID is obtained. Seha app tracks coverage.
Sidra Medicine provides world-class paediatric care — covered by NHIC Enhanced and Enhanced+ plans.
Sick child leave
Qatar Labour Law does not explicitly provide for paid "sick child care" leave as a separate category. Employee sick leave can be used if the employee themselves is unwell. Many international employers in Qatar offer additional paid personal or carer's leave days (3–5 days) by contract or policy. Check your specific contract terms.
Birth registration
Births in Qatar must be registered at the Births and Deaths Registration Department within 3 months. For expatriates: register at your embassy AND at the Qatar Civil Registry. Required documents: mother's QID, father's QID, marriage certificate (attested), hospital birth certificate. After Qatari registration: the birth certificate allows the child's QID and passport to be processed. Register the birth at your home country's embassy immediately as well — UK, US, Canadian, Australian embassies in Doha process overseas birth registrations.
Childcare rights
Qatar has limited state childcare provision. Nurseries (for children 0–4 years) are predominantly private and international, with fees of QAR 3,000–7,000/month (2026 range). The Qatar Foundation operates some subsidised nurseries for employees. Many compounds provide in-compound nurseries. Some employers offer a childcare/nursery allowance for young children as part of the expat package. Nanny/domestic helper: common in Qatar — sponsor as a household domestic worker (requires separate domestic worker visa, minimum monthly wage QAR 1,800/month as of 2024 domestic worker regulations, plus accommodation and return flight entitlement).
