Sweden (SE)
Sweden is a constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy in Scandinavia, the largest Nordic country by area, renowned for its breathtaking archipelago and lake-dotted landscapes, groundbreaking design and innovation culture (IKEA, Spotify, Volvo, H&M), one of the world's most generous welfare states with 480 days of paid parental leave per child, world-leading gender equality, and a deeply held philosophy of lagom — the art of balance and moderation — that permeates every aspect of Swedish society.

🧑💻 Freelancer / Self-Employed Guide
Steps to register:
- 1 Decide on business structure: enskild firma (simplest) or AB (for larger income or liability protection)
- 2 Register with Bolagsverket at verksamt.se (for AB) or directly at skatteverket.se (for enskild firma)
- 3 Apply for F-skatt (freelance tax certification) at Skatteverket — critical: clients need this to pay you without withholding tax
- 4 Register for moms (VAT) if annual turnover exceeds SEK 120,000 (mandatory registration) or at start if you expect to exceed
- 5 Open a separate business bank account (recommended)
- 6 Set up bookkeeping (bokföring) — required by law from first transaction. Use Fortnox, Visma, or Bokio software
- 7 Join a relevant fackförbund (trade union) for A-kassa access and professional support
Tax registration
Register at skatteverket.se for both income tax and, if applicable, moms (VAT). F-skatt certification is applied for separately and approved within days. Without F-skatt, Swedish clients must deduct 30% preliminary tax from your invoices.
VAT threshold
SEK 120,000 annual turnover — below this threshold you may choose not to register for VAT (momsbefriad). Above SEK 120,000, VAT registration is mandatory. Register at skatteverket.se.
Invoicing
Swedish invoices must include: invoice number, invoice date, seller details (name, address, organisation number, F-skatt number), buyer details, description of goods/services, quantity and price, VAT amount (if registered), payment terms. Electronic invoicing (e-faktura) is common. Late payment law: 30-day standard terms; interest chargeable on late payments under Räntelagen.
Social security
Self-employed persons pay egenavgifter (self-employment social contributions) of approximately 28.97% on net income (slightly reduced from employer rate for the self-employed). This builds up pension rights, right to sjukpenning (sick pay from Försäkringskassan from day 15), and föräldrapenning (parental leave benefit). Consider joining a voluntary A-kassa union for unemployment protection.
💡 Sweden's AB structure is popular even for solo freelancers due to tax advantages: AB owners can pay themselves salary (subject to full tax) plus dividends (taxed at 20–30% in some cases under 3:12 reglerna). The lönekostnad (total employment cost) must be factored in — if paying yourself SEK 50,000/month, the AB also pays SEK 15,710/month in arbetsgivaravgifter. Verksamt.se is the Swedish government's one-stop business registration portal.
