Visa-Free Access

EU/EEA/Swiss citizens do not need a visa or work permit to live and work in Sweden. They must register at Migrationsverket if staying more than 3 months. Citizens of the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, UK, and most Western countries can visit visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period under Schengen rules. For stays over 90 days or to take up employment, an appropriate residence permit (uppehållstillstånd) is required.

All immigration matters are handled by Migrationsverket (Swedish Migration Agency — migrationsverket.se). Applications are submitted online at migrationsverket.se. Processing times are published on the website and vary significantly. Sweden's work permit system is unique in Europe — there is no absolute salary threshold for most work permits (unlike Germany or Netherlands), but employers must offer "collective-agreement-level" terms. This makes Sweden accessible for diverse industries. In 2024, Sweden joined NATO — no impact on immigration rules for civilians.

Eligibility

Non-EU/EEA nationals with a Swedish employer who has advertised the position in the EU/EEA for 10 days. No salary threshold (unlike EU Blue Card) but employer must offer terms equivalent to Swedish collective agreements.

Processing time

3–8 months (standard). Fast Track available for companies that are certified Snabbspår employers.

💡 The most common route for skilled non-EU workers. Tied to specific employer initially. After 2 years with the same employer, you can apply for a broader permit. After 4 years of continuous permits, you can apply for permanent residence (permanent uppehållstillstånd). Sweden's work permit system is employer-driven — find a job first, then apply.

EU Blue Card Sweden

Eligibility

Highly educated non-EU workers with a Swedish employment contract paying at least 1.25× the average gross salary (SEK 52,000/month gross in 2026, per the Swedish National Mediation Office; effective 9 July 2025 — verify the current threshold at migrationsverket.se before applying) and a relevant university degree (minimum 3 years) or 5 years equivalent professional experience.

💡 The EU Blue Card in Sweden offers the advantage of EU-wide mobility after 18 months. Spouse/partner automatically gets a residence permit and work authorisation. The salary threshold was reduced from 1.5× to 1.25× the average gross salary effective 9 July 2025. Often less used in Sweden than the standard work permit as Sweden's general work permit is already employer-flexible.

Student Residence Permit

Non-EU/EEA nationals accepted for full-time studies at a Swedish university or approved educational institution for programmes over 3 months.

💡 Students may work during studies without a separate work permit. After completing at least 30 higher education credits (Swedish HE credits), students can apply for a job-seeking permit for up to 6 months after graduation.

Family Reunification Permit

Eligibility

Spouses, cohabiting partners, and children of Swedish citizens, permanent residents, or persons with time-limited residence permits.

💡 Sweden tightened family reunification rules significantly. For spouses: both must be at least 21 years old (åldersgräns). The reference person must meet a maintenance requirement (försörjningskrav) unless they are Swedish citizens. Partners granted family reunification permits may work immediately.

Permanent Residence Permit

💡 Getting permanent residence (PUT) is a major milestone — opens access to more benefits and makes you less dependent on employer status. Naturalisation (Swedish citizenship) possible 5 years after first permanent residence.

Self-Employment / Sole Trader Permit

Non-EU nationals who want to run their own business in Sweden. Must demonstrate capacity to support themselves from the business.

💡 Sweden's self-employment permit is selective and difficult to obtain. Migrationsverket assesses whether the business is viable and whether you have the expertise. EU citizens can freely set up a Swedish business without any permit.

Digital Nomad

Eligibility

Sweden has no dedicated digital nomad visa as of 2026. EU citizens can work remotely from Sweden without any permit. Non-EU remote workers for foreign companies without Swedish income have very limited options — technically working without a permit if based in Sweden for more than 90 days.
