Sweden (SE)
Sweden is a constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy in Scandinavia, the largest Nordic country by area, renowned for its breathtaking archipelago and lake-dotted landscapes, groundbreaking design and innovation culture (IKEA, Spotify, Volvo, H&M), one of the world's most generous welfare states with 480 days of paid parental leave per child, world-leading gender equality, and a deeply held philosophy of lagom — the art of balance and moderation — that permeates every aspect of Swedish society.

📊 Income Tax Brackets
| Income from | Income to | Rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | 643,100 | 29–35% (kommunalskatt only) | Municipal income tax (kommunalskatt) only applies on income up to the statlig skatt threshold. The exact rate depends on your municipality — it ranges from approximately 29% (Österåker, Vellinge) to 35% (Dorotea, Ljusnarsberg). Stockholm municipality: ~30.07% in 2026. This is the flat rate on all employment income below the higher threshold — Sweden's income tax is nearly flat at low-to-medium incomes. |
| 643,100 | ∞ | 49–55% (kommunalskatt + statlig skatt 20%) | Above the statlig skatt (state tax) threshold of SEK 643,100 (2026, raised from SEK 613,900 in 2025 — indexed annually), an additional 20% state income tax (statlig inkomstskatt) applies on top of the municipal rate. Total marginal rate: approximately 49–55% depending on municipality. The värnskatt was abolished in 2020 — the top marginal rate is now municipality + 20%. |
🏛️ Social Contributions
Swedish social security is almost entirely funded by employer contributions (arbetsgivaravgifter). Employees pay no direct social security contribution. The 31.42% rate covers: ålderspensionsavgift (pension 10.21%), efterlevandepensionsavgift (survivors 0.60%), sjukförsäkringsavgift (health insurance 3.55%), föräldraförsäkringsavgift (parental insurance 2.60%), arbetsmarknadsavgift (employment 2.64%), arbetsskadeavgift (work injury 0.20%), and allmän löneavgift (general levy 11.62%).
Workers build up allmän pension (general pension) from their first income-earning year. 16% of income (up to a ceiling) goes to inkomstpension; 2.5% to premiepension (premium pension — individually invested fund). The 7% "employee" contribution is technically a pre-tax deduction in the tax calculation but not withheld separately.
Self-employed persons (enskild firma) register for F-skatt (freelance tax certification) at Skatteverket and pay egenavgifter (self-employment contributions) equivalent to the employer's social security contributions. F-skatt certified businesses can invoice clients without the client deducting tax.
🛒 VAT Rates
Some services are exempt from VAT: healthcare, education, financial services. The Swedish VAT acronym is "moms" (mervärdeskatt). VAT returns filed monthly or quarterly via Skatteverket.
