Payment Culture
Sweden is one of the world's most cashless societies. Swish (mobile payment app) is universal — used for splitting bills, paying at markets, and person-to-person transfers. Contactless card payment is standard everywhere. Many shops and restaurants are entirely cashless. Cash is rarely needed and some establishments refuse it entirely. Bank cards (Visa/Mastercard debit) are accepted everywhere that takes payment.
ATM Tips
ATMs (bankomat) are found in shopping centres, train stations, and city centres but are less common than in other countries due to Sweden's cashless culture. Forex and X-change offices exist in airports and major cities. Foreign cards may incur fees — check with your home bank.
Exchange Tips
Use Wise or Revolut for international transfers — far better rates than Swedish banks. Swedbank, Handelsbanken, and SEB offer international wire services but at higher fees. Avoid airport exchange booths. Swish requires a Swedish bank account and BankID.
